Rubber behind deco Trim 69 T

I'm trying to get the rubber behind the Deco trim to stick and lay flat. Terry at International mercantile said just make notches and press it in . I'm not getting it done. Any other helpful hints ie: heat or contact cement.
    Thanks

    Alternative?

I believe you have the same problem I had when I was trying to install some new "S" trim decos on my '68 a few years ago. I ended up taking a rubber inner tube from my wife's stash of bicycle parts for her road bike. I cut it in two, making one very long piece. My first attempt was on the nose piece. Working from the bolts on one end, I cut slits in it to make it stretch tight across the back of the deco, and when installed on the car the width of it was perfect behind the trim. I then just trimmed the ends accordingly with an X-Acto knife. It looked great. Not a common fix, I'd say- but it worked! I did this on the rears as well. I think I used two tubes to do the job.
