In the collector car world, there is only one first, and the 1967 model year for Porsche was the introduction of the “S” model which would be synonymous with “The Best of the Best” for the next 40+ years!

This particular example is extremely unique and special. Many early Porsche S registry members are very familiar with this car and can vouch that it is a spectacular example. The owner of this car is the 3rd owner and is highly regarded as someone who expects the best and only owns the nicest examples. I’ve had the fortune to help this owner sell many of his cars and have found that he is a great person to buy a vintage Porsche from.

This 911 was custom ordered new from Porsche by Apollo 7 Astronaut Walt Cunningham. It was ordered in the same color as Steve McQueen’s 911 from the movie LeMans. He drove the car for a few years and then sold it to a couple who lived in Denver. A couple of years later, the wife snuck out of the house in the middle of the night and rolled the car down the street and took off with the car. She divorced her husband, kept the car and moved to New Mexico where the car lived until 1999 when the current owner purchased it. Immediately, he had the whole car gone over to make sure everything worked as it should.

The interior was lightly restored to include the headliner, seats, dash top, and carpet kit. Other than that, the rest is original and in unbelievable condition. While the interior was being refreshed, a nearly $3,000 custom Alpine Stereo was installed with MB Quartz speakers and a Phoenix Gold Amp. Everything was tastefully done and hidden.

Most of the chrome and bright-work on the car is original and in amazing condition. People think it is restored. The rubber moldings on the outside of the car are all original too and in beautiful condition. The pans and the rest of the car are rust free except for one tiny bubble on the body behind the front passenger wheel-well right in front of the deco molding. This spot has not changed in the last 9 years. The car has been thoroughly inspected and no other rust was found.

7,000 miles ago, the motor was rebuilt. The original pistons where perfect as well as the cams and crankshaft mains. They went one over on the rod bearings to clean them up. The carbs were rebuilt and an oil cooler was installed. The transmission is a very unique custom ordered part from Porsche. It is a short-geared box with a 904 main shaft from the factory. This was custom ordered by Walt Cunnigham. It has a VERY short ratio. It can easily keep up with any 2.4 S motor. John Bunan (one of the Gurus of Porsche transmissions in the country), rebuilt the entire gearbox and said that he had never seen a trans so original with all the gears date stamped ’66 and ’67.

The next step was to make this car drive exactly as it did when delivered new in 1967. So, correct new Koni shocks were installed and Jai Lee at Mirage International did an extensive corner balance and alignment. Finally, 165/15 Vederstein tires were installed. Also, the factory Fuchs were restored by Harvey Weidman.

The car’s paint has a fantastic patina. It was repainted it’s original color with a nice deep lacquer paint around 20 years ago. It really has a great look to it.

This car has additional unique options. It has a factory sunroof that works like new. They estimate that only 1 out of every 10 cars in 1967 got a sunroof. Also, it was delivered with 1-year-only sport seats without headrests. Finally, the car received a custom mirror from Porsche similar to the ones originally delivered on the 550 Spyders.

This car includes VOLUMES of paperwork. Lots of early receipts including Walt Cunningham’s original license plates from the Manned Space Center in Houston.

It is rare that cars like this come available to purchase. And, I’m sure that once purchased, it will not become available for a long time again. Don’t let this opportunity pass you buy to own a fantastic and important example of early Porsche 911 history.

After driving the car back from San Diego yesterday, I'm in love. You are right...This is what Early S's are all about. Absolutely pure. The engine sounds so SWEET!

Whoever buys this should send Eade a thank you note every year. Not many cars like this come available.

Why is this car going for so little?

As a NASA employee and long time Porsche owner this is certainly one of my ultimate 911's.

    Okay ....MUST....have...this....car.

I'll throw in the contents of my garage

    a '67 911S (real nice)
    an '88 930 M505 (9.5/10)
    a '96 993 (nice driver)
    a '73 911T MFI (nice driver)
and even my sons '84 944 that we just picked up today...
plus my kidney and my brain (oh forgot my wife says that's not worth anything)

Now since I don't technically own all those cars even though they are in my garage we will need to act fast and to sweeten the deal even further I'll throw in the contents of Luke's garage. (Relax Luke I'll let you have it for a few days during the summer...)
