    Converting 912 to 911 6 cyl motor

    I am gathering the pieces to swap my 69 912 over from 4 cyl to 6 cyl power. I've searched here, Pelican and Google without find "the" definitive guide to doing so. Can anyone provide details on the minutiae involved? One of my challenges is a limited amount of time to work on it, and that where I store and work on my car is an hour of the city, so there's no running down to the local FLAPS for something.

    My 912 currently has a 2.4 Type IV motor based on a 914 2.0 case with CD ignition, oil cooler (from an SC) already mounted in the fender (hard lines down the rocker).

    So I have:
    • a complete donor motor with cooling tin and engine mounting bar (a carb'd 2.2)
    • oil tank from a 71
    • donor engine mounts already cut out (the mounts on the body) and will have to "create" the appropriate opening for the oil tank filler and filter
    • I know I will need a new tach, as well as the oil pressure/temperature and oil level gauges (don't have them yet, but will find)


    The donor engine also comes attached to a 915 transmission, so I guess I have to (at some point) decide if I want to switch from the 901 to 915, but that's another discussion.

    For my oil cooler, the oil lines currently come off the driver's (LHS) side of the engine, so they don't 100% match up with the oil tank, so I know I'm going to have to get some lines made for that.

    Does wiring exist for the supplementary gauges, or will I have to run wiring for that?

    Can I use the 915 flywheel to mate to the 901? Can I use the 914 901 flywheel? Or do I need to find a 911 901 flywheel?

    Anything else anyone has to add who has been there, done this?

    I have done it. The wiring is all there. You will also need to re-index your rear torsion bars. You need an early 911 flywheel if you use a 65-69 901 trans.
