Radio dash panel re-install help needed

After removing the aftermarket cassette and installing a correct Blaupunkt in my '71 I'm concerned about the installation of the basketweave dash plate over the radio. Just wondering if there were any tips.

The radio is in flush with the dash but it appears that getting the plate over the dial face and knob shafts, and in the trim channel might be tricky.

Please no advice like the Haynes books use, "install is reverse of removal", I don't want to go that route!

    Thanks guys

    No secrets I know of.

Just that the galvanised plate is slightly larger than the dash trim and needs a little flexing to fit in the channel in the dash trim.

I had an original fitment kit for Porsche from Blaupunkt which had the plate like I describe

If I remember correctly, you have to slide the facia panel in place before inserting the radio.

Bad memory I think as you can't do that as the whole body of the radio pushes in from the front and is held in place by the two spring clips at the side which attach to the radio itself.

Have to put the plate in last unless I am going absolutely crazy

Yes it has to go in last, sliding in from the right with the glove box open. My concerns are keeping it in the channel while getting it over the knob shafts, dial face and buttons. Maybe the radio will push in further and than back out into place? I see fiddling in my futer.

    Read my posts.

You can't so it that way you have to sit the plate into the bottom slot of the dash trim and gently bend/spring the plate to fit in to the top groove. It should be gal steel so will spring back not bend permanently.

If you making your own plate you can check the fit by sliding in with the glove box but you CANNOT fit it that way if you have the correct back support plate in place as well as the side spring plates which stop the rdio from going back any further

    Thanks Clyde

I didn't see anyway to get it in from the side, the old one came out over the aftermarket radio but the Blaupunkt posts and face are much different. You're second description is much clearer. I do have the original galvinized/basketweave face plate and will do the method you described.

Do you have the black back bracket as well that holds it all in place and stops any movement
