I have just bought a new one - and agree that the stalk IS different -- now a softish light black rubber type material rather than the hard dark brown of the original

when i put it in the car i will now have 2 old ones with an identical problem (and I suspect 99% of all other ones have the same issue). The plastic part that separates the various blades of the light switch melts and does not provide enough clearance allowing high beam to flash on when the indicators return to the rest position, and as the situation gets worse allows the high beam to go on as the car goes over any sort of bump.

You would have thought that there would be someone doing a refurb of these parts by now - as it is a tiny plastic part that has to be replaced in a switch that costs A$400 out here.

however looking at it the plastic part is bonded to the different blades of the switch and the whole assembly is riveted together - meaning that it would be likely to be a moderately difficult thing to fix.

It might be easier to replace the handle on the stalk - I seem to remember a thread where that was mentioned

    attached are photos

*old and new one side by side
*close up of new and old handle
*close up of new switch showing plastic part that melts
#$#$ melted plastic part on old switch for comparison

i know my close up photos are not focused enough - could not make the camera do what I wanted

If you do not find what you are looking for, I do have a boxed new 911.613.301.30 but it is as posted by Hugh with regard to the stalk, available for $125 plus shipping from the UK.

    Regards
    Tim

Stoddard used to sell the plastic handle separately from the switch, and it matched the original pretty well when I bought one. It was a while ago that I bought one, but it would be worth checking out.

    Thumbs up

Thanks to all for your responses...

Thanks Hugh for your always expert explanation and illumination...

The last 3 hours of the drive home from Monterey with high beams only was a real PITA...

As Hugh suggests, and now I have learned, that when these cars are 'driven' these switches fry and fail, and to pick up a serviceable used one is still buying a preordained sentence..........

So a new one it is, from a local supplier... and maybe pin driving out the new stalk for the old ...... we'll see

    Cheers and thanks again,
    Chuck
