Thread: Market for Repro Door Pockets?

  1. #1

Question Market for Repro Door Pockets?

    Hi Guys,

I was thinking of having reproductions made of both the fixed and pull-out sections of the door pockets made for 1969 - 1973 model year 911 and 1969 912. (I assume they are the same)

The intent is to make them identical to the originals at a lower cost than the OEM versions. I am leaving open the possibility of using newer technology to improve upon some aspects of the original design; but, ONLY if it's not visible once the assembly is complete.

For example, replacing the cardboard in the pullout pocket with a more durable material that will have the look and feel of the original once covered with the vinyl material.

My question is, assuming that they are ½ the price of OEM’s and they do indeed come out as being at least 95% (or better) identical to NOS parts, would you guys feel there’s a market for them? Or is it OEM or nothing?

Thanks for any and all opinions.

I think you should make them. I'm not aware of anyone making these '69-73 pull out door pockets. Originals in poor condition are selling for ridiculous prices. I think if you make them at a reasonable price there will be a demand for them and you will also do a service to the early 911 community...and hopefully you will also make enough profit to continue making them. Good luck.

Can someone chime in on the quality of the ones in the link above? I thought they were less than ideal when compared to original? I need some that are 95% close to original or I will just stick with my old stock ones. I would gladly pay a fair price for a set that was nearly identical to original.

Autos international have on their website the doorpockets (repro) for 74 and up for a very decent price ($242 / set, $350 / set covered). They might have the earlier one's too?

I mentioned that they are for 74 and up and that is why it might be good to check re. availability for earlier years to avoid doing the same thing. They might already have the earlier one's available or in process.

No affiliation, etc. Just helping to think.

The door pockets in the ebay ad are very good. I have installed a set with good results. Make sure you have all your old fasteners, as he's a bit greedy about the hardware.
