I have a '73 that is currently being inspected by my local mechanic. I bought it as good "runner" but wanted to confirm if it is as-new or not.
Anyhow, if it specs out, I may not use it, as I have realized that selling this tranny, if in perfect shape and buying a finished Wevo-ized 915 will be wiser and cheaper than rebuilding a good trans.
Let me ping the shop and see where they are with it.

Kenick, You were supposed to get back to me last friday ?
Any development ?

Here’s the short story: my mechanic and I made a deal I couldn’t refuse: I’ve been using a borrowed set of Webers from him for almost two years while trying to find a decent set of Solexes. Since that effort has been futile, he offered to trade me the trans for the Webers. Made us both feel good and was fair given he’d let me run his carbs for far too long.
That said, while he has tentative plans for the trans, he said he’d be amenable working a deal for it.
First, the basics: it’s apart and my mechanic says the transmission met the description, as it was sold to me. It looks fine – definitely a good running transmission.
The specs for the tranny are correct for the year:
R&P: 7:31
1st – AZ
2nd – HX
3rd – NT
4th – QP
5th – TM
Condition Details:
- Both pinion shaft & main shaft bearings run smoothly
- The synchro rings are all in spec, but based on visual inspection, he suggests replacing 2nd & 3rd, for peace of mind.
- The main shift rod is bent (very common due to improper Eng. / Trans removal from chassis) and the coupling locating hole is has some nicks. The rod will be straightened, so none of this affects the function of the tranny.
- It also has the correct early 1st & 2nd Hub & Slider; the later one is stronger, but he says there is nothing wrong with the early type.
Bottom line, it could go back together and work just fine, but doing a few things since it is open would be even better. So here’s what he quoted me before the Weber deal, if I wanted to rebuild it:
- Gasket set: $51.00
- 1st Sync Ring $100.00
- 2nd Sync Ring $100.00
- 3rd Sync Ring $97.00
- 4th Sync Ring $97.00
- 5th Sync Ring $97.00
- Rear M/S Brng $250.00
- Front M/S Brng $195.00
- Clean & reassemble: $480.00
If I’d decided to rebuild, I’d have most likely done the following:
- Replace the two recommended synchros and reassemble.
If you want to chat with him, I am happy to put you in contact.
For context, my mechanic is fantastic: he works on all of the early cars and RGruppe cars on the east side of the Seattle area as well as maintaining two factory 935s for a local race team. He is also the proud owner of a real 914-6 GT and one owner 914-6. He knows his stuff and has been doing this professionally since before I was born.![]()
