makes you wonder just where the ceiling is....... i guess the recession is over![]()
I thought RS lightweights are NOT supposed to have undercoating in the engine bay to save weight. This car clearly has it and it looks like the original factory undercoating that would normally be on touring RSs and regular early 911s. Can someone explain if this is supposed to be incorrect/correct?
This RS was produced after the homologation process (roughly the first 1000 cars) was complete so it was produced in the same manner as all the other production models, ie with full undercoating. Sparse undercoating was only used on the homologation models. These were then later converted into the model that customer had ordered, both M471 and M472. There were a handful of homologation models that were left uncoverted.
The sparse undercoating was applied prior to paint so eventually both lightweight and Touring models would basically have very little undercoating if they were produced during the homologation process.
I see one of the previous owners is a member here.![]()

Just out of interest I was always under the impression that the RS in either touring and/or lightweight spec was never officially imported into the US in 72/3.
If that was the case, what was the legal situation for those who brought them in as private imports, what if any modifications had to be done to get them on the road?
cheers, Mike
