There are two hood badges for sale at this moment. Both say they are origional, one has orange stripes, the other has red stripes. Are they both origional, or when did the factory change colors.

This is the badge on the 1970, 700 mile silver S.
The color appears to be similar to mine (at least on monitor) when mine is viewed in natural light. Mine is not completely orange like 66's, more of a red-orange. The other two original badges I have are the smooth back type and they are more orange but, strike me as darker than 66's.
I plan on taking a couple of natural light shots tomorrow and posting them.

Wow, man am I confused now. My understanding was that the early 911 series had the crest with the orange bands and that the more modern (1974 and up) cars came with the maroon bands.
The picture Michael posted of the 700 mile 911 has the maroon badge and should be original to the car. Is this a game changer for all of us?
I told you I was confused

You cant depend on a photo to give you a true reproduction of a color. Depending on the lighting and exposure of the photo, the shade can be significantly different from one pic to the next.
This is also the 700 mile hood badge and you can see that it is indeed orange.
The red on later hood badges is also translucent and you can see the texture in the metal beneath the color.

We all know about moniter picture problems and shading, however the one badge for sale is absolutely orange. Your picture is not red, but it is not very orange either. Is there maybe 3 colors out there? Very very orange, soart of orange and red?
I am attaching 3 pictures, two are from a 356 horn button and to me are soart of orange, one is a new 911 and is soart of orange, to the eye. I will see what the moniter says

Mike,
I looked at the for sale listings that you were referring to and I suspect that the difference in color is mostly in the photos, with some difference possible from exposure to the sun.
You going to be at Hershey?

I think the orange gets oranger over time so most people have been conditioned by the patina to think the early 911s had a more "orange" orange. The red orange seems fine to me.
I actually think the silver is coolest, but I am a hot-rodder.
The last one is a Carrera GT.

Agreed on the color, exposure et.
Just took this. Slightly overcast day but still bright. No flash. was still bright enough that I dumped three of the four pictures I took because of reflected glare.
So, what do you guys think of mine??? I can't trace it farther back than the older gent that sold it to me. He was a retired mechanic that collected hood badges. He mainly worked on English makes and had a peg board up in his garage with all kinds of badges wired in place. He was selling off some of his least favorites...He had a REO badge that I tried to buy but he would't have any of that!
