Thread: Aerodynamics question

    Aerodynamics question

Frere explains how the factory experimented with spoilers and ducktails in the early days and eventually settled on the front air dam as stock on the E and F series 911's to reduce front lift.
Then came the "G" series 2.7 cars where the plain vanilla 911 had no air dam in the front and of course no ducktail at the rear. (The G series Carrera got both the rubber air dam at the front and the ducktail I believe; I'm not sure about the G series S'.)
My question: having proven to their satisfaction that the E and F series cars should have the front air dam, why go backwards for the plain vanilla G series 911? Anyone know?

    My guess: marketing.
The 71-73 911T standard model did not have the front spoiler either.

In 1974 you would have the G range 2.7l "standard", "S" as well as the "Carrera", replacing the previous T, E, S model range.
Except in Germany where there was no speed limit, without these things the car's handling was in no danger when you would drive US +/- max. 55miles or ROW +/- max. 130km/h.

Well you are probably right, though it's hard to see how bending the front valence metal another 20° at the bottom would have raised the price point!
