    sport seat strip down

Is there someone who could provide a link to / or step by step on how to remove and take apart a sport seat so the frame can be cleaned / re painted.
I would like to save the covers for reuse .
    Many thanks

    strip down

    Hi John,
Well you have a tough job in front of you....which material are the seats ?
After you unbolted the hinge-cautious very strong and kicking, start with the bottoms.Flip over and take a cutter plier and a needle nose plier and prey all the hog rings open- also cutting might work.take the seat cushion off and very cautiously roll the bottom side covers over the corners-they might rip-attention- start with the hinge sided one before you try the latch one. With both covers off you can prey the foam off it's metall railings and voila with taking off the belts you can blast them and repaint them.....
Back cover, depending who upholstered them last or original take all the staples out with the needle nose, than proceed as before with the needle nose and the cutter plier to get rid of all old hog rings on the inner sides.
The fun part is to get the cover over the pivot- an old spoon might help to stretch the material over it-than easy pull the inner sides over the bottom foam and you should have a free cover with the headrest grommets removed.
When you do it back together you miht want to use plastic foil to cover over the foam pieces- the material might slide better over it.Good luck contact me when you are in trouble ?

If you plan a full restoration then Stefan has shortened the process considerably

I don't think it would be possible to put in words /pics some of the problems you will have......How to get the springs back in place on your own if you seperate the brackets for painting how to get the locking mechanisms apart and back together again, how to get the cotter pins out etc etc etc I am sure those who have done this as I have several times will know what I mean.

They can be a beast of a job if you go down to original metal frame.

Almost certainly the side bolster foam will be damaged at least on the drivers side and need repair or replacement...Hugh may chime in where you can buy the replacement foam parts he has done so I believe.

Thanks clyde ,i figure it's never as easy as it seems but it's an ongoing problem down here in NZ , early porsches are thin on the ground and the local suppliers know as much about things like these seats as i do , so why bother paying someone ? you just do it the kiwi way I.E yourself with help from your online friends .
So once i figure it out at least i can pass on the tricks and tips to others here.

I'm going in with eye's wide open let the fun begin

Been there Done that. (3 times actually => 6 seats in total )
If you have the seats dismanteled, make sure to check all weldings.
In most cases some of the welds are cracked and you need to redo them.
I've also had loose nuts on the back frame where the hinge mounts etc.
Also check the weld that holds the top parts with the hard foam in the back.
If you want to have the fraes powder coated, you must drill that weld to remove the entire top piece of the back. Do not try to remove just the hard foam, you will ruin your seats.....
Make sure you straigten the back frames before upholstry, in most cases they lean towards the back on one side from use.

If you happen to need new foam for the seats (I needed that for at least half my seats!) you can try this: http://www.sitzklinik.de/porscheshop/rs_m471.html
They sell complete sets of foam, in the corect size with the correct molds, but it is expensive and they are just a little softer that the original. (the price listed is per seat.......)

Whenever you go this route, just keep in mind what the end result will be if you have a good upholstry guy. (see pictures of before and after upholstry)
But make sure you checked their work first. I had one set done that came out really bad and I had them redo it. It was a little better, but still not the quality I would have liked after all the wrk put in the seats.....

    .
you used to be able to buy the foam pieces and webbing separately at southbound trimmers in the UK

i am not sure that you can still do that but it is worth a phone call
(the website is not the most useful thing but when you can talk to them they are very helpful as i expect UK members will testify to)
