Upgrading a 2.4E worth the effort?

    Hi all,

I sometimes have thoughts about raising the compresson in my 2.4E to get some more power than the stock 165 hp at 6300 rpm and a little better sound aswell. Iīve read about using 2.2S pistons to get a 9.66 compression, but is it enough to do the trick and is it cost effective? Or is it better to to a full upgrade to 2.4S spec with cams? Do I need to add a oil cooler with a raised compression? And are there any good sport mufflers with stock appearence on the market that also adds some hpīs?

My engine was opened and freshened by the previous owner about 15 years and 80.000 kmīs ago when two cylinders were replaced and all tolerances where checked. It runs very well today and pulls strong through the gears, and itīs almost 100% dry aswell

I drove Tom Morgan's old car, and i believe she had a 2.4E with the 2.2S pistons. I have a 2.4E (w/carbs) and I thought that his car had more oomph and was a very nice upgrade indeed. Tom's handle is "Racemor" and if you search his posts you'll probably find more info, or PM him. I think he sold the car to the UK, so you might check with Andyjboy about where it is now, and how it drives.

    Tomlin:

I am attaching a link to a Pelican search for upgrading a 2.4T which will shed some light on your questions. There are many comments about what can be achieved with simply changing to higher CR pistons.

I have a 72 2.4T MFI in Hellgelb (Light Yellow for us in the US) and I am planning to do a top end overhaul to gain more HP (53k on engine). Options I am considering are 2.2E pistons, 2.2S pistons, or bore cylinders to 85 mm and go with JE pistons (9.5-9.6). I am also planning either Solex or aftermarket cams, port the heads and open the stacks and TBs to S specs...aiming at approx. 200 hp with street friendly torque.

Whether it makes economic sense is always a personal question that only you can answer. An external oil cooler for extended spirited driving is always money well spent.

    why?

"It runs very well today and pulls strong through the gears, and itīs almost 100% dry aswell "

Why touch it? Are you racing or something? A stock 2.4E is a wonderful
    engine!

Thanks for the input, guys. What Iīve been able to pick up so far on the Pelican forum is that several people seem to think a "high compression" 2.4E is a nice engine and good compromise for the street.

Kjell, my stock 2.4E is working just fine but after a while the need for some more hp starts to grow on you... I use my car just for fun on weekends and have no plans to go racing with it or do track days.

A little update. I have bought a set of very, very low-mile Mahle 2.2E pistons and cylinders from TRE Motorsports that will be used when the time comes to refresh my engine. Donīt know when that will be, could be a year from now or 10 years. At this point Iīm just putting miles on the car and Iīm really enjoying it, this is the third summer I own it. Itīs a keeper.

After driving an otherwise stock 2.4 E before and after install of 2.2 S pistons I can say there was a very nice increase in response so much so I picked up a set of P's & C's for a 2.4E I have. Good chance they will never get installed but if I do find a home for the 2.4 the 2.2's are going in.

I have no problem with the theory that all men are created equal.
But after that moment you are on your own and nobody owes you a damn thing.

If you are going to open the engine and change pistons, you might as well get 2.7 RS Nikasils and get a true 30hp jump and quite a bit more torque.

    +1 on the above.
When my current 2.4E needed a full rebuild (new P+Cs) it was a real easy choice.. upgrade to 2.7 P+Cs , recalibrate the MFI pump, polish and port the heads.. a bit of machine work and I now have a engine to die for 222bhp and a high, flat torque curve RS owners appreciate....
Not as much top end but on the road here its a beauty..

My previous 2.4E had the 2.2 pistons and had c 175bhp....
