Thread: Oil tank mounting

    Oil tank mounting

I posted this on the "other" site, but didn't get any response, so I'll try here....

After finishing some metal repair in the engine compartment of my '67, I need to re-drill the holes for the oil tank.

Can someone provide me the hole dimensions?

    Thanks -

Not sure I understand what you want, the "hole dimension" is 8 mm. Or is it the hole "locations" that you want? If so, do you still have the hole for the filter? Where would you want the locating point measurements taken from. There aren't any easy reference points to use. Tell me what works best for you.

You're right Ed, I should have been a bit more clear....oops!

I need the dimensions for all of the openings; filter, breather, etc.

A picture would be great too if not too much to ask for??

    Thanks -

Here are some pictures for you Todd. The breather hole is 4 3/4" up from the longitudinal, in line with the fender brace hole. The forward mounting stud is 2 1/2" from the vent hole (center to center) The vent hole is on a angled stamping portion of the side wall. The rear mounting stud is 13" from the center of the fender brace hole, and 1 3/8" up from the longitudinal. You locate all of those and the filter has to fall in the right place. Of course it also is centered in a raised stamping.

    Excellent pictures!

Thanks for the effort, this helps a lot.

I'll use the grommets to determine the hole diameters.

    Thanks again

    I believe

    Tom,

The answer would be yes for my 67 normal, at least. The wires are there, tucked in the back (rear of car) engine compartment...just waiting to be hooked up. Interesting quesition, however, the sensor, I've found from other 911s, to be unreliable and failure prone. So, why do it? It's much more fun to check the oil with the dipstick. Plus, there is a lot of margin for level, so unless you've got a bad leak or burning problem, the gauge isn't all that valuable..all IMHO..of course.

Tom, the first part of the answer is that you need to look at your tank and see if there is a blank-off plate on it. I'm sure I have seen some early tanks that did not have the opening at all. Secondly, I'll respectively disagree with Allen in that I do like the convenience of being able to look at a dash gauge while sitting at a light. I've not really found the senders to be that unreliable. We don't seem to really change that many of them. I will agree that the final determination is the dipstick however.
