Nice badge/YOM plate combo.
From the years I spent in Georgia, I know it's one of the few states that still indicates the county of registration on its license plates. I also remember that before the county name appeared across the bottom of the plates, the county code was indicated by the first set of digits in the plate number. (I don't know when that switch was made - sometime before 1980 - and I sure can't tell you which numbers corresponded to which counties.)
So I'm curious: If you run a YOM plate in GA, must the county code on that plate match the current county where the car's registered?

Makes no diif on a historical plate. Although I have lived here for 20 years I did not know that there were numbers indicating county. They have always (in my time here) spelled the County out. What county is mine per the old system, just curious?

Bill,
A quick Googling of "Georgia license plate county codes" led me to http://www.scplates.com/gacounty which shows that for 1967 county code 48 = Habersham (Clarkesville, Cornelia).

As the other Ed suggested above, prior to affixing a sticker with the county name, Georgia identified them by number. The numbers were based on the total population of the county - largest county was No. 1 and the smallest county had the highest number, whatever that was. As I live in the City of Atlanta and thus, Fulton County, my 1958 356A bears the plate below, beginning appropriately with the number 1. Ironically, and quite by chance, the other numbers on the plate, particularly the last 3, have some pretty special meaning as well.Technically, my plate would be more correct bearing the letter "D" as, in 1958 it would have been appropriate for the weight class of cars up to 3,000 lbs. and the "J", which it bears is for the weight class of 3,501 to 4,000 pounds. Now, if that is more than you ever wanted to know about Georgia license plates, raise your hand!
