Does anyone know if it's possible to take out the guts of old Blaupunkt radios and replace them with modern stereo guts, so the radio looks original but sounds new? Does anyone do that?

I don't know of any, but you may consider your old radio with a new ipod interface. The old Blaupunktshave a connection that can be used. The cable is about $50.00, I don't remember who sells it. The other thing to consider is adding a modern amplifier. Good speakers and a high powered amp has a tremendous effect on sound quality.

I decided to upgrade from my stock Blaupunkt non stereo unit with a Becker Europa II I found on eBay that works as good as new and has stereo capability so the sound is better. I'm using under dash speakers and an adapter that allows me to connect my iPhone/iPod. It's a great update as I have Tom Tom mobile on my phone so it's like having a much more modern setup in my car but with Vintage looks.

Sure, NLA limited will replace your original radio with a modern, digitally tuned, MP3-capable unit.

I thought about this for a while. . . then I had my original Frankfurt reworked by Wilfred Wilkes. It's only original once. . . .

A shop called Electro-Tech replaces old radio guts with modern radio innards. They have a website.
Raj,
I don't know for sure but I imagine they outsource it. Next time I'm chatting with them I'll inquire. Funny thing is my car didn't come with a radio installed from the Factory. I can't wait to hear what a mono, one speaker radio sounds like. . . have to hide the Ipod somewhere where the judges can't see it for some "period correct" music during judging!

Koenig in Germany sells them all.

Old&new Becker's, Blaupunkt etc. as well as the ipod cables. You can plug it the "external" line, at the rear of your 40-year old radio.
I got one - but, as Raj, never used it after because the sound of the engine was preferable...

Raj,
Per the COA, my 71E didn't come with a radio either. My understanding is that the Blaupunkts and Beckers were such a pricey option, in those days, that many cars were imported with speakers only and the dealers would then install the buyers choice of radio. My E has a Clarion AM/FM 8-track in it and I bought a nice Europa II to replace it. While I was doing the resto on the car, I researched the Clarion and realized that it was actually the right vintage, so it's likely that it is original to the car and was installed by the dealer. I left it in.......the Becker is still on the shelf, while I hunt down period correct 8-tracks. It's such a work of art, that I may install it.....just to look at it.
