    68 911 on ebay

    Hello Esteemed Members,

Newby here...Looking at the 68 911 with sunroof on Ebay and expected to go see it this weekend in North NJ

The car has swapped out original engine for a 70 T, needs the interior to be redone, lighting /electrical issues to be worked out, including finishing the wiring for lighting and sunroof, new headliner needed and new seat upholstery. Owner has the new interior carpet. The shop that did a ton of the work would not give the engine a completely clean bill of health as they said they just swapped engines did a leak down and worked on the carbs...Does not have original rims and needs new tires along with some minor body work.

I really like this early model in polo red and understand that some expense must be expected but dont want to get myself into a sink hole especially since the numbers will not match.

What would be a fair price to the seller, very honest and seems like a good guy, but still leave myself enough room to do the needed work, perhaps 3-4k, to get this up and going as a nice weekend driver.

    Kind regards,

    Matt

I am sure the seller is going to want more than the car is worth. The mechanical issue is a big one. If Power Tech isn't willing to tell you the car is running well, I'd assume the worst. They've been around enough cars to know a sick one. Assuming it does check out mechanically and stops safely, it could be a fun puzzle to put back together assuming all the parts are there. The pictures do leave me with some questions as to how well things were done. Without seeing the car in person, I'd gamble no more than $7500. Seeing is believing and I could see in the $10-15,000 range. There are alot of cars out there with this level of reconditioning. Next opinion......

    John,
excellent starting point for me. I too feel like that is a good gamble price. Would love to hear more opinions as well. If I pull the trigger look forward to becoming a full member. The power tech guys said the cars was not registered so they could not drive enough to form strong opinion....

Why bother with something like that? It is red and has even more red flags. Cheaper to buy one in better condition and plenty around.

If in doupt and you simply have to have it, what about a PPI before you go? If the seller will not do it, this will give a clear indication what the car is.

Unless you are your own mechanic and get it at an unfinished project price ($4,000 to $5,000) and only expect 10 ft. driver quality then I think you can find finished, drive immediately cars, for maybe less than you'll have to pay someone to attend to the hundreds of little unfinished tasks left on that car. Not to mention maybe doing over some of the already finished work.

Thanks gents, will definitely get a PPI from Power Tech or Autohaus in NJ....Personally would like to get a good value and put the the tlc into the process but concerns understood loud and clear. If one knows of a good finished to look at please pass along.
    Regards,
    Matt

    Hello Members,

After reading information on this site for the past few weeks, I think I am going to join in 911 ownership after spending time inspecting the 68 red 911 on Ebay.

The pan, door seams, trunk & hood were indeed redone in 90s and there was no noticeable rust....The paint job was solid but has picked up a few nicks since then. The car still smokes when it first started but it has been in storage for over a year and was able to hold an idle after warming up for 5 minutes. Power tech suggested it has to be driven and worked off, oil residue and gas w stabilizer.

The seller has close to $20k in this car and I can get her for $7k slightly below what John thought would be a gamble price.

I hear the membership responses in that there could be a 100 little things that could kill this value. I will have to do some final electrical with a new flasher relay, it works off and on (not good), wiring the interior light and installing a sunroof switch and finding some brackets but P-Tech has given some estimates...I am nervous about the electrical wiring but hopefully it will not kill me. The carpet and headliner will have to be installed and reupholstering all redone but a decent place to be if they have to fine tune the electrical. After completing the above, I will eventually be in the market for some 15 fuchs now has 16's and I hope that Alan from the Uk has some nice shifter knobs which I have seen on some threads here.

I am hopeful this will become a fun non racer for leisurely driving, fingers crossed.

    Cheers,
    Matt
