    Barn Finds....too far gone?

I had a look at these early cars, 912 and 356, back in the summer and posted them on PP where they didn't generate much interest. I am in the market for an early car and currently I am leaning towards a 912. Received a phone call form the owner asking if I wanted to come back and "take another look" as he wants clean up his "dealership"... I plan to go back within the next week but wanted ask your opionions as to what to look for exactly and determine if they are too far gone for consideration. Please have a look and let me know what you think.

How much will they pay you to take them off of their property?

I think there needs to be a distinction drawn between a 'barn find' --- as in, something that is actually located indoors --- and a 'yard find' --- as in, something situated (or abandoned/deposited/excreted/etc) outdoors.

Agreed! The rust colored yellow 912 is visible from the road, which caught my eye, the 356 is behind the building and obviously the red 912 is inside....so this is a combination "find"....there are also a dozen completely worthless 924's scattered about. Really, it is nothing more than a reminder that not all "finds" are sexy, sought after, low mileage, dry storage, just clean em up and drive 'em! In fact most finds are similar to this one.... still the drive out to see them was worth it and will not deter me from the next story about the farmer with the old Porsche!

Not sure about value but take both 912s, use rust car for spares to use best possible parts on indoor car. You will have two of a lot of parts then you can sell some of the spares left over to take a bit of the cost away. I will take on projects that is worse than that, I have started a car in much worse shape than indoor one and it ended up at the concourse where it came 3rd. No politics it would have won.

Probably no useful parts on the outdoor 912. The 356 is one for Adam Wright. The indoor 912 has terrible wheels and odd flares. Probably fiberglass. Rust repair is not worth doing, 912 engines cost as much to rebuild as a 911, maybe more fussy as well. Money ahead to buy a fully sorted car.

The outdoor 912 has rubber hood hold downs. I say it is worth dragging out and seeing what is there.

I think the indoor one has a neat hotrod look about it, apart from where the fender repair
needs painting it looks like it could buff up nice and be a good driver, if it runs.

Type IV engines are cheap and you can get plenty of power out of them with the kits
available. Might be a way to go if the engine is shot.

Given current market conditions....is it worth revisiting these rusty cars? They are still there,,,almost 4 years later....thanks.

Maybe consider to have them to part out, and call it a day? Bare metal restoration, will start at $100K, and can triple depending how skilled you want to go with it. It might be better to start with some 930 and do a neat backdate with similar racing stripes.

More importantly, I want to know the story on the bullet holes on that 356! The bullet holes are in such good groupings that it seems like a machine gun.
