If you have ever visited the keys you have likey drove past this
island while viewing the scenic horizon fron the seven mile bridge.

I just received the following email from the Director of the Pigeon Key Foundation.
Unless something changes, the old Seven Mile Bridge to Pigeon Key
will be incapacitated, and Pigeon Key, the largest surviving collection of FEC structures
anywhere, will consequently close and slowly disintegrate. They're looking for folks to
sign a petition to change this outcome. If you're interested, please go to:

"Hello, We just spoke on the phone about the current situation of the old seven mile
bridge. FDOT has informed us that soon they plan on closing the bridge to all including
pedestrian and bicycle traffic. As you know from being the chair of the Florida East
Coast Railway Society there is no more historically significant part of the key west
extension than this span leading out to the base camp of operations on Pigeon Key.
We have created a new non profit organization called save old seven or S.O.S. our
new web site is saveoldseven.org. We are currently collecting signatures on a petition
to take to Tallahassee for "Florida Keys Days" up there. We have also organized a
group of local politicians and other influential people throughout the keys who we feel
can be beneficial in this matter. It is our hope that you can help in this by making your
organization aware of the situation and request that they go to the saveold seven site
and sign the online petition. The Overseas heritage trail installed counters on all the
old bridges a year or two ago. Over 100,000 people used the bridge in 2010. This
shows that the bridge is a destination in its own right even more so than the island of
Pigeon Key. We have been successful in creating an initial dialogue between the county
and DOT about the possibility of refurbishing the bridge on a scaled down version and
are currently waiting on those numbers to come back to us. Please let me know if
there is anything more you would like to know about this that I may be able to answer
for you. We would certainly appreciate any help the FECRS can provide."

Thank you,
