Thread: When did Porsche go to black on the decklid grille, rear emblems and lettering?

  1. #1

When did Porsche go to black on the decklid grille, rear emblems and lettering?

Also known as "what color should my 1972 911T grille, emblem, and letters be?". What's on there now could literally have been silver, or just super-faded black anodizing. I'd like to get it correct for the year.

    Thanks!

    Hey Scott.
The black grills and lettering came in '72, so you'll be wanting a set of black stuff.
Here is a link to a PDF of the 1972 prestige brochure that shows generally how the model year looked.

I believe there are a few discrepencies in the brichure, but it gives the general idea
    Hope that helps.
    Cheers

...noticing in the brochure that the tail light trim is also black. All along I thought it was chrome in '72 and changed to black in '73. Who knew...

Engine lid grille, and the lettering on the rear lid were black in 72...unless its a T and it was equipped with the optional S appearance group when the rear lettering was gold.

72's Horn grilles were chrome and front and rear turn signal lenses were outlined in chrome in 72. All of this changed to black in 73.

Frank is correct. The horn grills and signal lens trim should be chrome. This is one of the more obvious discrepencies contained in the brochure.

I believe that is because coochas has it marked incorrectly. That is the 1973 Brochure (look at pages 5 , 15 , 16 , 27 , 28...starting with the cover as 1).

You can see a view of what should be the 1972 english text brochure , if you look search with this search term :

Frank, my car is a T and was factory equipped with the wide S deco trim. So does this mean my engine lid grille should be black, and the "PORSCHE" and "911T" lettering should be gold? My horn grilles and front/rear turn signal lense outlines appear to be the original chrome as you note.

    Thanks, Scott

Peekaboo is correct. The "ivory 911" brochure was published in 1972 and again in 1973.
Cover and rear page are similar but for 1973 content and photos differ.
For 1973 several pages got replaced and at some photo on page 26, the 72 model oil filler trap was simply removed while retaining the same pic of a green 911T.
BTW, the 1973 brochure is much more common, the 1972 brochure much harder to get (and to spot).

    1972 Brochure, page 26, 911T

1973 Brochure, page 26 , 911T (oil filler trap missing but black rear&front marker lights added)

Frank, I dont think so. In fact, 911T's initially came with chrome lettering while 911S w gold. T could get this option in 68/69/70/71.
But for all 72&73 2.4l models (911T, E, S) it was (anodized) black. There was no chrome or gold lettering anymore available. With time, the (anodized) black lettering can fade and gives a slightly "chromed" appearance.

You're probably right Karim.....70/71 Appearance Group included gold lettering on T's, and I thought I read somewhere that 72's also came that way, however, I could be mistaken.

Does anyone have an options brochure like this 1970 for model year 1972? See page 20 of attached brochure for items included in the 1970 model year Appearance Group.

Frank, for 1972, there was a small option folder US (but not as luxury as 70/71) and its pretty rare to find. For RoW, they simply printed a booklets w prices and no overall option brochures.

    Here another 72 US brochure:
(As with most Porsche factory literature, they reused older shots and simply added or deleted an oil filler trap to make it a 72 or 73 model.)
