    1968 Soft Window Targa

Just finished up another SWT (except for rocker panel deco trim which is on order), It is vin 11880003. It was the 1968 New York autoshow car. Tangerine. Note the original sports seats (they are same as 67 seats, thin back, no head rests- since it was the third car produced in 68 they used the 67 seats). Long live the SWT's....

Very nice... curious if it had the US sidemarkers at the 1968 New York autoshow?

I believe the sidemarkers are original so I elected to reinstall, although my understanding is that they were only on Euro cars. The car has a MPH speedo and US gauges. So it's an odd combo.

They ONLY came on US cars - it's just-a-tad-bit younger sibling 11880004 has 'em :-)

Glad to see they are both alive and rockin'! 003's a beauty!!

    Question

    softarga,

Is this very pretty targa for sale or discussion?

If it's for sale please state a price, if for discussion I'll move it to the General Forum.

    Cheers

Just a thought on the '68 Sport Seats, were they one year only for '68 with the slider handle lever coming out through the upholstery of the seat?

I just bought a 1968 SWT #56 and my car doesnt have side market lights, and as far as I know its a US car. I'm waiting for the COA from Porsche. So, no side marker lights on euro cars?? Mark-Seattle

Euro cars shouldn't have side marker lights. They were a US-only 'enhancement'. I've got 50032 and it doesn't have markers (Euro S, so it shouldn't have them). It's down to bare metal and I can't find evidence for holes for the markers. I'm guessing on the euro cars they didn't bother to drill the holes.

Thanks! I have a lot to learn about this SWT, Any other significant differences between the US and Euro Spec SWTs?

It's why I questioned U.S. sidemarkers. Seems odd they would have been tacked on a showcar, would like to hear from one of the historians as the data is slightly confusing. Were the 268 standard '68 911 Targas built (#11880001-11880268) both US and ROW?
From what I've read, the production for 1968 suggests so.

It makes sense to send one of the first '68 Targas produced to debut at an important US show, but adding non-standard markers doesn't. IIRC it wasn't until 1972 that they were regularly installed (stateside) to meet DOT requirements.
Someone please correct me if that's wrong.

Neither of my '68s has ever had them; the T (#11870098) was Euro delivery program, the S (#11850236) imported in the late 1980s. Guess some states were more liberal about Federalization rules than others.

Anyway, nice car and I see from your other thread, it's sold already. Congrats to the new owner.
