It all depends on what you want to do...do you want to race, or just run high speed parade laps?

Some of the organizations promote racing, with points and championships, and others promote getting the cars on track in a somewhat safe controlled environment for all to enjoy.

Also, depends on the car. Not all cars are accepted by all organizing bodies, although in this economy, if your check clears, just about any group will let you in! Funny, but true.

I would find the group that runs the tracks you want to run, and put your application in.

Are you interested in running for a championship? Just for fun , cherry picking the best events each may offer? VARA probably has the best schedule for the year, with lots of events, and lots of competition in the smaller bore classes (where your car may be classed). HMSA has the most glamorous with Wine Country Classic, Monterey Historics, and Coronado as their big events. HSR West typically has the later model cars (RSR, big bore stuff) but gets good local entry at their Phoenix event with the smaller cars.
If you are new to racing, I strongly recommend going thru the whole program with the Porsche Owners Club. They have consistently produced some of the best racers in P cars due to the way you get trained. Once you have run a couple years with them, you will be welcomed by the three vintage groups with a minimum of rookie scrutiny. And the tight wheel to wheel experience gathered will put you near the top of your class with them to
