    Jim McKeown ST/Flares

Saw this picture for sale on eBay. Here is the description:

    Porsche 911
    Jim McKeown
    Lakeside International Raceway - July 25, 1971
Round 6, Australian Touring Car Championship

Are these one off hand built flares? Also, what is the scoop under the bumper? Air flow to the cooler?

    Sean,

I assume Hugh H. and other of our 'down under' friends will jump in on this one....

I was given, and keep in my garage, a cool pic of this car in an earlier configuration.......

It DID get pretty wild and woolly back in the day down there..........

Downhill, 2 lane, flat on it and that single rail keeping you back from who knows what is down there! Probably for just a cup. That's what madness for speed is all about.

i understand that they were homemade or hand formed flares and a number of the 911's here had the same shape. I have only seen photos of the under bumper scoop in one race so dont know exactly what it was but airflow up to a wheel well mounted cooler seems likely

here are a couple of other photos of Jim's car and one showing another car with a similar flare

Ok, who's going to be the first guy to build a replica with those flares? That would be cool.

    FYI.

"who knows what's down there?".... a big drop into the treetops..that's what!

Bathurst circuit is basically a rectangular shaped hillclimb circuit...with lots of twisty bits along the way.
A Public road converted to a racetrack on occasions.
Porsches have featured strongly in "open" events there. Also porsche-only races.

It is now most famous for the annual "Bathurst 1000" ie 1000 kilometers exclusively for V8 super-car touring sedans /Ford vs Holden(Chevrolet).
Starts about 10.00am and finishes late afternoon.
Off the Grid it's a hard left and a continuous climb to the summit. A fast run across the ridge ("skyline") and then flat stick down through the "Dipper"..where this photo was taken.
Onto the downhill "conrod straight" ( V8's hit about 300KPH) to a 90 degree left hand corner (1st/2nd gear) into pit lane. This circuit is VERY hard on cars/brakes.

I have not done this ..but I reckon if you google or youtube "Bathurst 1000" you may get a run of this unique circuit?. Certainly worth a look.
On a plan map it looks like any other race track.
    Cheers
    Bob

OK, as an addendum on my last post about the Bathurst track.

    Youtube
For an in-car camera with a running description of speed/gears etc .....you may have to put up with the V8 supercars 'cos that is where they have the best technology/cameras etc.
Search "Bathurst 1000" ...and look at "2004 Bathurst 1000 Greg Murphy hot lap" for a 3D track image and verbal description with engine telemetrics.
Then look at "Lowndes onboard 2010 lap record" ...for a non-verbal run with a much better view from front windscreen.
    Cheers
    Bob

amendment? This is out of Sync. This has beaten my first post??? where I said that "what is down there" is lots of air ..and treetops!!

Looks like the first post has disappeared into the ether?

Also try youtube and search " porsche + Bathurst"

Those flares are kinda hip...but wouldn't be my 1 st choice for a build...

    a bit OT....

but I've seen V8 "in car's" at Bathurst before, ...and I always come away thinking those cars seem VERY dialed in..almost ez to place..w/ very little steering corrections...impressive.
