Thread: bay area 911e ??

    bay area 911e ??

I'm a rookie. Haven't owned a 911 (80 SC) since Reagan was in office. Looking for a good 911 to enjoy on weekends. This one has some obvious modifications. No mileage listed. Tansmission work is way above my paygrade. Am I nuts to consider an early 70's E like this?

$ timebomb? Or, a car to enjoy for a few years and re-sell?

This makes sense if you do the maintenance on your own. Nice color and investment. Good Seller.
But you may miss your Reagan-era aluminum block!
You should consider a sentimental trip with the same color and year you had in the 1980's.
For a good 911 to "enjoy" on weekends, you may want to go a step further in "driver" focus. Are you in Norcal?
For a pure collectible or a collectible driver, I would consider hiring techweenie on pelican to find one for you and negotiate.
It will save you hours of work and headaches while eliminating most of the risks and optimizing the purchase price. He found an amazing 75 targa up here with your Reagan-era 911SC motor and great driver mods for under $14K.

That E has had some mods that detract from it's value. It would be expensive to get it back to factory specs but if you don't mind it's current configuration it may be OK. I'd reccomend an SC or Carrera over that particular example.

Thanks for the quick feedback! Phil.. I haven't abandoned the idea of (another) SC or a Carrera. But, I'm attracted to the more simple aspects of the late 60s-early-70's 911s. Two things that set me back from that E on pelican are the fiberglass bumpers, and perhaps more of an i$$ue, the 'stacked carbs and SCCA license plate frame. Car might have been 'tracked' and the seller - this is a consignment sale - says he doesn't know much about the car. But, back to your comment- i head a caution note in the phrase "that particular example" Do you think 911e is a model to setter away from? Or, just that specific car?

There are many of Board members here who own or have owned "E"s.There is no reason to steer clear of "E"s. Phil was referring to that specific car.Welcome to the Board,John! Tom

I see no reason why you should steer away from that particular car. 2.2Es are outstanding drivers and some actually prefer them to the S of the same year. Looks like it maintains a lot of its originality, including the original Light Ivory or Hellelfenbein color.
The underside doesn't have any major red flags, but may have been cleaned up a bit.
The major detractor for value/originality would be that the original MFI is gone (However, it kind of looks like the injectors are still there), while this would cost upwards of $5K to get back, the car should run fine with carbs and may be an easier entry into the longhood world that fiddling with MFI from the outset. Most of the other originality issues (wheels, front/rear bumpers, rear flares) are issues of personal taste that can be changed if you ever wanted to go that way.

Looks like a good starting point to me. The price isn't ridiculous and likely has a little room for bargaining.

If you're in the bay area I would recommend that you get a PPI done by a reputable shop (like the Stable (415) 776-2707 ) for this or whatever car you end up considering.
I'd also recommend that you stop by the regular 1st Sat of the month EarlyS cars & coffee (this Sat by the way). The event is located @ EASY (http://www.easypor.com/) and the folks there are a great resource for info etc.

    Good luck in your search!

One picture of the front underside looks like there might be a rust hole on the tank side of the front crossmember, right behind the tow hook. Worth investigating. Otherwise the car looks a bit crusty in places, good in others. I'm a big fan of airfilters on a street car. I'd be worried about what kind of grit the engine has sucked in through those mesh caps.

Seems like a good car at a great price to me...looks to be as rust free as these things can be, and it wouldn't take much more than some front and rear bumpers and trim (under $1K), remove the decal (free), and polish the Fuchs paddles (free) to make it look very original. I like to see the VIN sticker on the doorjamb in as nice of shape as that one...usually indicates only one repaint was ever done. Too bad the MFI is missing, but I had an ivory '71 E Targa very similar to this one and it was a seriously fun ride, and the Webers let out a deep snarl! Get a PPI and snag it!
