    . . . w/ needs

    . . . on Cranky Ape Auctions --- c/o BaT . . .

. . . . . . Description: 1970 Porsche 914/6 Convertible. We believe the engine to be a 2.0L, 1991cc / 121.5ci, V6. It is backed by a 5-speed manual transmission. It features manual windows/locks, aluminum wheels and a Kraco AM-FM dial radio. Currently does not run. The odometer shows 34217.
Estimated Repairs: Battery is missing. Paint is peeling and chipping throughout. Dings/bends around trim of roof line/windshield. Bottom edge windshield plys are separating. Bumpers are faded/weathered. Tires need to be replaced. Wheels are heavily scratched. Door panels are loose/falling off. Carpet is moderately worn and driver's side is missing. Driver's seat appears to be aftermarket and has a 5-point harness. Passenger rear tail light and driver's rear turn signal are inoperable. Headlights will not flip up. Engine is missing spark plugs, points, air filter(s), and box covers. Underside of car engine bay is oil covered. We were unable to verify if the engine will turn over...upon turning the key, nothing happens or is heard. We were not able to access the starter to attempt a direct jump . . .

I looked at this car in person this morning and took many pictures. The motor turns over freely with a wrench on the crankshaft. The carb linkage is frozen. I tried cleaning the area by the thermostat to look for a engine serial number and didn't see the number where it was supposed to be, but it was greasy and 15 degrees outside so maybe I missed it.

Here are my thoughts on this car, it looks to have lead a fairly hard life at the track. It has been repainted at least once and at a very minimal expense. I say the track because of the amount of mud on the sides of the car, almost as if it was side swiped on both sides. The windshield frame has peeling paint at the top and underneath the heavy coat of orange lies a layer of Irish Green. At the base of the frame the paint is cracking, did the whole thing get replaced at one point in time? The front of the front trunk shows previous repairs of maybe rear ending someone, wavy seal wall near the latch. The front trunk has a fuel cell that was wedged in doing some damage to the headlight bucket and the vin tag as well. The paint in the front trunk has some sort of undercoating in it with orange paint over it. The original tank is no longer present. Some surface rust near the passenger lower door hinge on the A pillar. The floor area that is both visible and hidden behind the carpet is in good shape, no visible signs of rust. Many areas show that orange appears to be the original color, but may have been another color at some piont in its life. The "hell hole" amazingly is full of dirt and debris but seems solid. I dug out the debris and took some pictures close up. The battery tray on the other hand is toast. The bumpers are nice and straight, almost the highlight of the car. Underneath the car I found lots of pealing undercoat, but no holes that I could see. Given the car is sitting basically on three flat tires, it is hard to see much under the car. The rocker covers are a little loose and I was able to pull it back and snap a couple pics and feel around with my hand. The rear portion of the inner rocker areas appears to be in decent shape. I am not by any means giving this car a cancer free bill of health. Who know what the previous paint job is hiding. The paint job at the bottom of the doors was so thick and droopy it is incredible it is still holding to the car and in some areas it is not. All of the wheels have some sort of rash or cubing, and at least one wheel is missing a valve stem, so bring a spare if you plan to roll this car at all. The rear trunk is nice and mostly untouched and clean. Some sort of eyebolts were installed at some point in the rear trunk, I do not have a clue what they were for. The transmission is a tailshift so it could still be the stock trans. The heat echangers are still present, but condition is iffy at best. A small amount of rust is present at the corner of the rear apron above the exhuast outlet. The tail lights look to be in good shape. Some surface rust is bubbling on the driver side quarter near the tail light. The rear arches are rolled out at least 2 inches, they appear nice and smooth but it would be very difficult to undue. Multiple spots on the pinch welds for the pan and rocker areas are seperating and rusty, but not gone. The seats are not amazing, but I would say they tie with the bumpers as being the highlight of the car. The vinyl sides didn't seam to have any tears, but the center cloth, although not torn, have seen brighter days. The wiring for the headlights was poorly repaired with butt connectors. The VIN stamp on the top of the passnger wheel housing is present and matches. I forgot to look at the vin tag in the windshield. Sorry. The relay plate on the drivers side of the engine bay is not present. The connector is there but the rest is MIA. Spark plugs are not in the motor, but like I stated before, the motor turns over with ease.

I am not an expert, but do have some knowledge as a semi recent 914-6 owner, and I would say that this car is well worth the money to the right person for a restoration, not as a driver as is. I do not believe the motor to be original, combining that with the rolled rear arches, I would say this car would be a great candidate for a GT flared hot rod.

I was interested in this car until it surpassed about 13k. I can't justify the cost above that mark. If you find my write up helpful, or just know of some 914's that deserve the grave as parts cars, or a rust free 4 cylinder shell screaming to have a big 6 put in it, please send me a message to amtrakjack@gmail.com. I am located near Minneapolis, MN.

As a side note, the people at crankyape.com were asking me when I got there if I was there to view the car for a German guy that was very interested in the car. It is safe to assume that the bringatrailer write up has many people interested from over seas and it will go for a good chunk of money. Amazing for a very unoriginal car given the condition.

I will link the pictures when I get home and have them online.

great review of the cars condition, was interested , but also when bid went over 12 k , and restoration cost in excess of 30k, body apart for repair of unknown damage, paint , engine, trans, interior, this car shows the value of buying a 40 -50 k 914-6 is a cheap price especically considering finding some of not common restoration pieces.

9140430924, from the DOT decal it may be that the car was tangerine originally. Did you get a photo of the Karmann data plate?

Thanks for the synopsis, amtrackjack. I'd been following this from the start and expected plenty of bid activity...

Someone took it home for $20,101.00. Now the work begins.

I bet it is on a boat by the end of the month...

Seems the German investors want the fixers due to the high taxes on purchasing an already finished car at much higher prices. Upon inspection the nice car will get hit with a high tax. Compared to a fixer they can restore it and avoid the higher tax rate. Seems 20 grand is the going rate to Germany for a fixer sixer...

What on earth are you talking about? Import thru holland is 6%, no matter how shiny it is. 6% on a $5000 car and 6% on a $500k car. Same difference.
