I'm looking for opinions about the fit of the left (driver's side) fuel tank support replacement sheet metal from
Stoddard (SIC 501 023 00) for $104 for a 65-68 SWB. The welder tells me that he only needs about 6" of front/forward portion.
Thanks!

Unless it is the new piece made by restoration design without the "bump" the piece is wrong
Get the new one without the bump and save $$$, fit not perfect I hear but better than fabricating
I appreciate the welder's desire to save metal but I cannot imagine replacing only half of the part from a structural standpoint or in terms of ease of repair. I would replace the whole thing, you KNOW there is rust in it anyway.

Based upon Neil's reference to part number and "driver's side" he's talking about a different piece, shown here in the Stoddard catalog (item 10). I have this piece in my garage. It's crap. Maybe the vendor has improved it, I don't know.

I've only ever used the factory piece for the longitudinals, but haven't done a SWB needing one. However I don't ever expect a repro anything to fit nicely, just goes with the territory. If a choice is possible I will ALWAYS choose the more expensive OEM part.

John,
Obviously the reason I started this thread was to get an idea of how the Stoddard repro. for $104 compared with the Restoration Design $390 repro. Does this one lack the bump you mention?

Bill,
You are correct, it is item 10 on the Stoddard catalog.

Ed,
Stoddard no longer sells the left side tank support for a SWB, only a LWB.

I believe the piece John thought you were talking about is item #8.
I don't know the difference between the SWB and LWB versions of item #10.

Bill,
In fact, I ordered #8 last week from Stoddard. A few weeks back Maurice told me that these were back-ordered. Last week I spoke with Mike after I noticed the price took a jump from $80+ to the $127 that it is now. He said that he was just that moment opening a box with a shipment of #8 from Restoration Design. Stoddard will now sell the RD repros instead of the poor quality items he sold previously. They might have been Dansk? I don't know and didn't bother to ask.

Neil,
I suspect the #10 SIC p/n is a Dansk piece, but I don't know for sure. Whomever made it ought to be ashamed. Unfortunately, I left it in a box for a few years before inspecting it, so shame on me.
I too bought #8 from Stoddard (at the same time as #10). The #8 piece was good quality, but it did have the bump John refers to on the forward, driver side portion. I will cut that off and modify it. None of these commercially available pieces are correct in that they all lack the elongated indentation that receive a correspondingly shaped protrusion from the battery tray. I may ignore that detail or try to salvage it from the original support, depending upon its condition.
