    1972/2013 Laguna Seca Can-Am

I've been lugging dusty trays of Can-Am slides around for the past forty years, and internet friends like Mark Morrissey have been after me to buy a slide scanner. Earlier this month my neighbor Bruce Canepa invited me to see the new owner try out George Follmer's 1972 championship-winning 917/10-003 at Laguna, and I realized that I have a bunch of photos of the car at the same venue from 40 years ago. My pal John Brooks finally convinced me to get my act together and has kindly posted some of my old pictures on his blog, DoubleDeClutch.com I hope that you enjoy them:

    David,

Thanks! Wonderful photos old and new. And a most excellent essay to accompany them.

That is an impressive miniature photo collection. Do you have any others from that day?

I was at that race. I was 12. I remember the rain. Why? Well, my parents weren't getting along so well during that period and my MOM stuck to our plans and took us kids to the race anyways. What I really remember is my Mom getting us out of there with her HUGE Lincoln Mark IV. The parking lot was so muddy and we were slipping and sliding all over as we exited. Miss you Mom...

    Thumbs up

I was at that race as well. I was 23 pitting for a 2.5 TransAm Alfa GTA. The little sedans were 'sharing' that cold, wet Oct. weekend with the 'Big Bangers'. After helping 'repair' a Sat. qualifying shunt through the night, and getting car on the track for Sunday's race... the rest of my remaining (still awake) seconds were watching the CanAM cars.......

These 'amateur' type snapshots are always so much more satisfying to look at than the pro stuff. They really capture the atmosphere of the day much better. That first pic of the start really tells a story. Thanks David!!

Peter, your mom was cool. I had to push the family Plymouth out of the mud and wound up covered in the stuff from head to foot.

Chuck, sorry that I didn't use any of my precious Kodachrome on the Alfa you were crewing -- I do remember liking the tri-colore paint scheme. I was more interested in some guy called Morton who was driving a Datsun for some other guy called Brock. Morton had really impressed me in the Under 2.5 Challenge race the year before. Here are a few quick scans from your race group -- Morton unloading one of Brock's 510's next to Richie Ginther's transporter. Sorry for the lack of color-correction.

I'm glad that folks are enjoying these amateur photos that I took as a 15 year-old. There really is an "atmospheric" quality that the sterile pro stuff doesn't seem to capture.
