    Data Acquisition

I'm amazed how many vintage cars have data acquisition systems. They've become common now in vintage racing. This is a column I did last year for Vintage Motorsport magazine. I'm still waiting for someone to use an Apple operating system for one. All we have right now are apps for our iPhones. The g-force apps are pretty neat though.

I installed an air fuel ratio meter in my car for one time tuning of the MFI. Still there two years later. One of the most useful instraments in the car. My car always runs lean half way through the warm up process. The AFR meter confirms this and I simply adjust the throttle position (step on or let off on the gas pedal). When cold or fully warmed up....no problem.

What is an air fuel meter? (I think I understand what it measures but how does it work, where is it placed etc.)

It measures the air fuel ratio at a sensor that screws into the exhaust manifold, upstream of a catalytic converter or muffler usually. Innovate LM-2 is a great wideband version I use on my cars and my motorcycle. Indispensible tool.

I've used them on the dyno and love them. I wish I could locate one with a memory for track use. That way I wouldn't have to look at the gauge and try to remember what the numbers were. I have enough trouble just keeping track of the turns on the track.

On my old "Jetronic" Z car I had a potentiometer mounted on the dash. I could richen the mixture from the driver's seat! I've been reading about others doing this on "old cars" to work with the new fuel blends.
