In the case of the gull wing, the article is a bit unclear whether this a test drive or a joy ride.

"Hey Joe, the owner this car has some strange pull to the right at a higher rate of speed.... I am going to test drive it."
"Wow Mike, I've never been in a Gull Wing. Can I come along?"
"Sure Joe jump in, but put your seat belts on"

You gotta remember two main things here...

1. Cars in a mechanic's shop usually have something wrong with it.
2. The car itself doesn't "know" its worth two thousand dollars or almost a million dollars.

So the real question is; does this happen more than we know? I mean.. so you get your car worked on, and then its time for a test drive. Say something new develops or the fix wasn't complete and /or your mechanic gets a little less on the toes than should and something new categorically gets exciting? A mistake or two happens and oops.

am gonna say THAT particular scenario is far less likely than the more obvious choice.

am guessing he showed up spiked to the max on valium when asked to view the carnage and do the interview.

Probably barely mumbling under his breath. With glassy eyes and semi clenched fists.

Sad to see such historically significant cars wasted like this.

In my opinion there is no such thing as a totalled Gullwing. The owner will realize whatever the current replacement value of the car is, which means he can replace it with another identical one, perhaps even with more desirable attributes than the one he had.

Maybe I'm in the minority but as much as I love my car (and I do dearly), it is simply a thing. The two individuals inside the car were not apparently injured and they are living beings. Perhaps the owner's calm came from the realization of that fact and the knowledge that he would be made whole regardless.

With all that being said, what a shi@#y thing to have happen.
