I'm happy to have the oppurtunity to help someone in this forum once!
These oil filters are somehow a real mess!
Actually, there are at least 2 different types. They are all strainer filters, that means that the filtering elements are made of metallic mesh discs.
The differences are in the number of discs, and then their size.
356 Carrera and maybe 550 spyders: Small bowl
904: Same as 356
911R: Same as 904
906: "big" bowl
you'll probaby find 906's fitted with 904 ones and 356 may have seen even smaller bowls.
The top plate is the same for all If I'm not wrong.
Threads as M26*1.5 from memory
For the little story I managed to find 5 NOS units last year. They are very hard to find... They were used on some helicopters, as a gearbox oil filter back in the day... Be prepared to pay more than 1000$ if you really want one!
I have some pictures, and will try to dig'em out this WE if you want.
Olivier.
For what it is worth, I have found the ones used on 356's to be dated.
Manu,
Here is a picture of a 906 "big bowl" type. The R used the same big bowl. Note the unit found on the R had a bolt that extended all the way through the base of the bowl, secured with an acorn nut at the top. The bolt possibly aluminum. The acorn nut looks to be the same used on 911 engine case bolts. The port inlet and outlet on my console are m22x1.5.
Take care,

While on the topic of this filter console ... Thanks to the help of a few friends I made a handful of the brackets this console mounts to. The bracket is employed in the R and select few T/R. The brackets are accurate in all dimensions even the spot weld pattern. I you need one for you project or restoration I am happy to help.

I made & sold 10 for prototype restorations back in the early 80's. The rendering was just for clarity.
Ben Coles has some reproduction filters on his site. Don't know hold old the info is or the quality but they sure look good in the photos.
