    Door handle resotoration

Is there a treatment that will bring back the luster of the inside door handles. They appear somewhat faded. What do the experts recommend?

I've tried just about every trick, potion, dye and OTC product that I could find, without success. Then I stumbled upon a vintage bike solution. This one actually worked wonders...

or just search youtube for, 'heat gun motorcycle plastic'.

I would recommend removing the handles prior to heating as you really don't want to melt the door card vinyl. After slowly heating just like in the videos, mine look really good. The respectable 'used' patina of 41 year old black plastic, no longer those ugly grey scratched up things that were there before.

Try it slowly at first to prevent warping of the square surround.

There's really only one product worth talking about when it comes to restoring black plastic items like our door handles - Polytrol.

Really impressive stuff. If Polytrol won't bring it back, nothing will.

The bad news is that it's not available in the states. I have an online source that will ship to America but, for me at least, it only clears customs about 50% of the time. I end up paying double but it's still worth it. PM me if you want the details.

You can also restore the door handles back to the factory finish (color/texture/gloss) with the correct application of SEM Color Coat. For door handles, I recommend Landau Black followed by Low Luster Clear. Make sure you prep with SEM Soap and SeM Plastic and Leather Prep followed by two coats of adhesion promoter. If you prep correctly, you'll end up with a finish that will be very durable.
