Question on transaxle 901.101.301.OR #103585

Hi!

First time posting here - my name is Christian, I live in the Bay Area and I recently acquired 2 Porsche 912, an engine and transmission as part of a package deal.

I have started participating in the 912 forum but it seems like the transmission I got could possibly be from an early 911S - hence my question here.
I hope this is the right section.

Is it possible to confirm if this is indeed a transmission from a 911S, or a regular 911? Is there anything specific I should know about it?

Yes it's from an early 1967 911S

Yes Christian, by the numbers that is a 1967 911S transmission.
It can be used in a 912 prior to '69 if the axle flanges match the axles, and the front mounting hardware is changed. The 5th gear ratio will be taller than standard for a 912.

thank you guys - I appreciate the quick answer. The 912 is a 1967 indeed so I guess it will be a good fit for that car.
I may want to get it checked/serviced before though.

Any suggestion for a good shop in the Bay Area?

Christian, there should be several good independent Porsche shops in the area that can service a 901 transmission.
A basic service would include disassembly & inspection, replacing any bearings, synchros or shift parts as necessary, adjusting the shift forks and re-sealing the transmission.
You will need a specialist if the ring & pinion needs set-up or replacement, if you're re-casing the transmission or replacing the differential.
Someone on the board can recommend a local shop that specializes in early Porsches.

PS- You will sometimes hear people recommend a Porsche shop by saying "they have all the factory tools" which is usually complete BS.
If a shop makes that claim about Porsche transmission work, they should have no problem bringing you into their service area for 5 minutes, opening the manual and showing you the necessary tools & instruments.
If they act insulted that you don't trust them, and cannot spend a few minutes with you, then just thank them and walk away.

One shop to consider is RMG Enterprises in Sunnyvale. Ask for Bob Grigsby (408-738-2060). He used to own a '67 912 and they service a lot of air cooled cars.
