WTB: 'Sportomatic' rear decklid logo

Guys,

I would like to add a 'Sportomatic' emblem/logo to the rear deck lid to my 73S coupe. Part # is 901.559.309.00 (gold) or 901.559.309.01 (chrome). I will buy either one as I plan to paint it black.

And I know. A 73 S sporto did not have a factory sporto logo. But I figure "flaunt it if you got it". And besides, I have a spare deck lid without holes in the basement.

This has to be the most disturbing post I've read in some time.

So Frank, why did Ed Mayo (in answer to a PM that I sent to him on my sporto request), tell me that I should ask you if maybe you have an extra lying around and not being used on your Sporto? What does Ed know that I need to know? And how could you not like a Sporto?

The funny thing is that I DO have an NOS gold Sportomatic emblem in the wrapper.
I've been saving it to eventually play a practical joke.

Been around for a while. Registry #322. Got my first Porsche (was also my first car) as a 2nd Lt. in May 1969.

At the Daytona Rennsport with the 40 years of 911 display, the 73 S with sporto was lined up in the display next to a 74 911 belonging to a guy named Bob Snodgrass. Great guy to converse with. Bob spent quite a bit of time telling me how a co worker named Peter Gregg always thought that he (PG) was faster in his 73 S with Sporto than he was in a 73 S with a 5 speed. Not sure if you have heard of these guys, but I mention the story in passing as a point of sportomatic reference.

Obviously you are not aware that only a person secure in his identity can drive a Sporto. In any case I used the 73 2.7 MFI coupe in 2009 when we did One Lap of America (finished 2nd in Vintage foreign behind an RX7 with a Chevy Small block). So I have been able to get in touch with my shifty self.

Funny you should raise the Sporto issue. I was thinking about doing the Copper State 1000 one of these days. How bout I ship the Sporto to your shop so you can store it till I get there? It may add some class to the operation.

Note to Cliff: The Sporto deco picture and part number(s) show up in the 69 parts book. In the 70/71 parts book only the Part number shows up (no picture). In the 72/73 parts catalog even the part number is gone from the index in the back of the book. Not sure when they stopped putting them on the rear deck lid. Probably when they ran out of stock.

Negative?

That hurts my feelings.

But being the voice for the majority when others won't speak out is my cross to bare. Most early 911 owners think Sportos are a joke. That's just the way it is.


I accept that some people like sportomatics and suppositories. I just don't understand why.

Maybe it's similar to morbidly obese people who say they enjoy being super, duper fat? They try to justify their condition instead of changing it.

Or BMW guys who try to defend the SMG? Arguably tied with the Saxomat for being worst automanual of all time.


But enough of that... John, did you find your emblem?
