I think early European S...
It`s an oldie for sure...what`s behind the paper tag? the electrical s seem to be even earlier than any 911 OR 901 that I`ve seen before. Perhaps John Audette might be of assistance on this.......jaudette3
It looks a lot like an early Volkswagen or Porsche 356 symmetric beam (works equally poorly whether you drive on the left or on the right) headlight, except that it doesn't have a tab at the bottom for the single mounting screw.
I've never seen a parts catalog listing for a Porsche 356 asymmetric headlight lens for driving on the left.
This is from a photo somebody posted of a Gmünd coupé that visited Cars & Coffee:
Early Porsche headlights came with a variety of adjusting screw positions but the shape of that hole in the bottom for the mounting screw (instead of the tab usually seen on VWs and 356s suggests it may be for a different make of car or truck.
Some DKW Schnellaster Kastenwagen had a headlight like that--others had a VW/356 style tab:
By the way, your headlight uses a BA20d bulb--I think Porsche switched from BA20d to P45t bulbs sometime in the late 1950s.
I vote for early VW, probably with replaced trim ring suitable for 911/912's.
Cheers,
John
Looks a lot like the headlight off my 3=6.

I can only speak for the socket and bucket and those are definitely split/oval VW which puts it between pre-57. Jon dated your bucket as '56 so I'd market it for all Oval windows '53-'57.
All parts are 'early European S", unless proven otherwise.... ;)
