Fuel Filter for 1968 911L?

I am uncertain what fuel filter I should have on my 1968 911L with Weber carbs. I have seen various inline filters in images on various sites.

I received the car with a "Malpassi King" metal bowl filter/regulator and Facet fuel pump bolted onto the Electrics Panel in the engine bay. Bit of a squash but just fits. The filter/regulator is postioned on the carb side of the pump in terms of flow. Would it work on the tank side of the pump as this makes fuel lines route easier?

I recently sold my 68L that was equipped with the same set up as a car with MFI. Was a late model 68 with non elephant pattern interior and the open decklid.

The original Bendix and later Facet pumps have a filter in their housing....just unscrew the bottom hex in your photo.

There are several after market in-line filters which would supplement the pump filter....which I would not rely on alone.

Safety concerns would dictate placing the filter OUT of the engine compartment...either up front by the tank or underneath by the gearbox as the line exits the bulkhead.

I chose to add an inline Bosch filter below the engine compartment in the soft line from the tunnel to the engine bay. Works, fits great.

Wix racing filters have a micron rating of 7 but these filters can only operate below 50 psi.

Wix also makes a cartridge filter for the larger Fram fuel filters. These have a 5.9-micron rating and can operate up to 150 psi.

K&N fuel filters start at 25 microns and go up to 100 microns depending on the filter model.

Ethanol: If you use gasoline that contains ethanol you simply can’t change your filter often enough.
Ethanol acts as a cleaner in your fuel system. Residue from your fuel tank and fuel lines ends up in your fuel filter.

I'm curious, why is the pump's built in filter not considered adequate ?

The Facet filter is a 74 micron. For Weber carburetors a 10 micron filter is recommended.

I have been using a Mahle KL 11 which has been working fine for the last couple of years, even with E10.
