Howdy group,
What are your thoughts on window tinting an old 911. Being a desert dweller, July- September can be brutal in a parking lot. Our state allows 20% tinting on all windows except the windshield. I'm thinking it would help cool the interior somewhat, protect the old school vinyl, and yeah- it would make the car look mean as hell! Anyone run film in their machine, or is that sacrilege.
I believe window tinting was available as an option for 911s from day 1 - order was for catacolour

in a warm/humid climate tinting would not make much difference as the early 911 ventilation system is/was useless until you opened a window
after a '63 356 B,a '68 912,a '69 911 and a '70 914 - ask me ...... :(

I don't have it on mine as I don't leave it parked outside in the summer much. I have it on other cars but don't think I would like the look on the early 911, and can't imagine that it would make much difference when driving as the windows are down.
That being said, with the right car and color, it would look great. The modern window tints cut out UV rays and would protect your interior if you keep it outside. So go for it if you want. If you don't like it, it always comes off!
It sure affects your vision thru the rear window when trying to back up at night!
My black on black car has Wincos 45 tint on all windows except the windshield and it's made a huge difference in the summer. Newer tint material can provide great heat rejection without being really dark.
My COA lists "Tinted glass all around".
new technology means car tints don't need to be as dark as before to do their job. I just got 3M Crystalline 70 on my wife car, and it looks almost clear but still cuts way down on heat and UV. I believe 3M also makes a 90 which is basically clear. Not quite as effective as the 70 but should be good for the OP's application. I'm going to do that with my 67 S when its complete.
Thanks for the input guys. My COA says window tint, although I don't know what that means today. I run 20% on my other vehicles and I'm comfortable with the visibility. I also run it on my helmet for my bike. It's an after market film that is removable fairly easily. I think it's a cheap $200 investment. I don't drive it much after dark, and I think it will work. Cheap insurance for the interior and its preservation. Windy roads and minimal traffic all.
$200? I guess it depends on what type of film you use. Warning - not all films are created equal.
