Small flag mirror glass seal help needed!

Hi, All -

I recently took apart two small flag mirrors so I could re-chrome the stalks. "They" didn't make these easy to disassemble!

All was good except for the fact that the seal around the glass got a bit beat up. If I could only source some new seals or servicable old seals, I would be in business with these two mirrors.

What do you guys do in this situation? I'm sure this isn't a new problem, and all my favorite vendors only have repro mirrors and no glass seals. Let me know what you would do, thanks so much!

That's a tough one. I doubt there are any good originals floating around as a separate piece. You might be able to buy a beat up original mirror that has a good seal, but if the mirror is bad it's likely the seal is too. Another option is to buy one of the reproductions and cannibalize the seal. That would be a pretty expensive way to do it (like $150) and I'm not certain the seal for the repro will fit the original. Best to measure one first before going to that extreme.

I had the same issue with one mirror, a friend had a very early repro version mirror that did not last long. Chrome was pitted within a year and one mounting bolt just sheared off. I took the mirror glass out and hoped I could use the seal. Well, no good, different form, not the same at the edges so useless. I am not sure what seal they use now but chance that you waste 150$. Best is to search for an original mirror and use the seal. Brake the glass first and take it out so you have do not take the risk to damage that seal as well.

So, the seal from a repro is visibly different from the original? How disappointing! I would much rather use one that looks like the real thing - after all, I am restoring a 911! It's another tough situation to hunt down a mirror that *doesn't* need rechroming. Thanks for your thoughts.

Definitely from the old repro's, I can't say that about the new Porsche delivered mirror though. Never had one in my hand.
