Was driving and everything working great. Stopped for gas and suddenly I had only had gears: 1, 2, 3, and R. Shift pattern went wide, like 4th became second, and 5th became third. I limped it home in third at around 50mph. Is this some weird linkage pop or something. Anyone have something like this occur?
It does seem like your shift coupler, has just slipped over a few teeth. It is not always the best clamp. Could be an easy fix. (under the metal plate, on the floor, near the back seats)
Awesome, thanks. So it’s internal and located under that metal plate inside. Is the coupler a ring or a link or bracket? I never poked around in there myself.
Check shift rod and ball cup bushings under shifter.
Yes, under that metal plate, It is most likely just the clamp, I think it is two 13mm wrenches.Quote:

Thank you guys. I wiggled on a couple things, and realized I’m out of my depth. Local mechanic can’t look at it until August 20th, May not make car week this year with it. Looks like I’m cruising in the P Rex this year- 928, please don’t think less of me.
Stig, I'm going to ask again, have you checked shift rod bushings under the shifter. The shift rod adjustment under rear cover doesn't just loosen. Such a sudden loss of shifting, sounds like bushing to me.
I had similar symptoms in my 70E. The forward tip of the shift rod which the ball cup receiver screws on to is fastened to the main rod with two spot welds. Those welds had failed on my car. There was enough friction when going fore/aft and pulling toward driver to get R-1-2-3 (tho sloppy), but the shifter would just wallow to the right making 4-5 impossible. Required engine/trans drop to replace the shift rod.
Hopefully yours is just bushings....

Peel back some carpet and unbolt the shift assembly from the floor. The end of the vertical gear shift lever (6) fits into a socket (22) that is attached to a horizontal shifting rod (21) that goes to the rear of the car. Inside this socket is a plastic cup (12) that makes for smooth movement of the parts. There's a good chance that instead of finding an intact cup you will only have a bunch of plastic pieces stuck together with old grease. Clean out the socket, install a new cup, reinsert the lever, bolt the assembly to the floor and you should be good to go.
