Elephant skin, or hide, is the term we use for the specific vinyl used on some 1968 cars. The 72/73 vinyl doesn't have an official name that I'm aware of but many of us refer to it as pigskin.

Elephant is 1968
Pigskin is 74-76

72/73 is just coarser, not aware if there was ever a name for.
