Can one change from a 73 flag mirror to this mirror with things lining up properly? Wondering how different the base is - have a feeling my paint is all good underneath as it is a restored car so if the edges are a bit different I should be able to polish away any marks from where the flag gasket has been...

Base it smaller but should not matter much.

I have changed my mirror on 3 different 912’s from the round small and large Durant mirrors to the small 73 flag mirror without any issues.
It bolts up the same. But, why would you do that on a 73!!?? I love the flag mirror.
I know - I generally want everything stock on my cars - but she's a 73 and I've changed the bumpers to 72 and the grill to aluminum and the like (everything original stored carefully) and I've just always loved the round mirrors, so it's one last thing I like that I can have without damaging anything...I would also prefer the older green gauges as well but that's too much...
BUT, I just got the round mirror and the hole pattern is far longer. OOPS. So much for that. For future reference, no they are not interchangeable.

yes the genuine round ones have one fixed bolt and another that is in a slot so there should be no problem in making it fit. Another trap on the round ones is many aftermarket ones do not have sufficient adjustment of the mirror to give the correct rear view that is not the case with original ones
Original ones can be identified by the star placement on the logo - search the site there are a number of threads on identifying a genuine round Durant mirror from the many repro ones
At least you can change it back…. The “Durant” mirror has 1 fixed and 1 adjustable stud to change the spacing so an original should bolt on using the existing holes.Quote:

The round mirror is so small as to be almost useless, at least to my eyes. A flag mirror is markedly more functional for driving. 2c
