I have a serial number stamped from the factory on my transmission tunnel. The first four numbers match the rest of the car's other serial numbers. All the Porsche experts that have seen this all seem perplexed. Does anyone have more info on this? I'll post a pic tomorrow.
what "level" of expert? According to my limited knowledge... Those numbers only have Karman vehicles or am I wrong? I have to be...obviously there are experts who have not been able to say what that number is...I suppose that with an image everything will be better understood.Quote:

Yes, I have studied these numbers extensively, and the link in the post above has a good bit of info. My name is also mentioned in the 914World post. I figured out the Karmann # for the 914's back about 1977.
The Karmann # format is dependent on the model year to some extent. You can PM or email me for more private information.

There is also the production # stamped on the lower dash frame, and it should be similar; the meanings are the same, just the serial is usually different (they are not synchronized). In 1970 they do appear to be synchronized.
The combination of VIN, production #, Karmann # and paint code helps me date production, and to determine VIN's when they are missing. I have a friend with a Karmann # very near yours, just 12 off.

Very early Karmann 912 may not have had any #, then up to about 453500 it was in the speaker recess on the top of the dash before moving to the tunnel.
Dave, I searched all my photo archives from my restoration. Unfortunately the only view I have of the area is not very definitive. It’s prior to my cleaning and painting, during the floor replacement. Although the photo suggests there is not a number there, kind of hard to prove. I can say I definitely don’t remember one there, and if I saw one I certainly would’ve photographed that type of detail. My car is number 824, and completed in May of 69 as I recall.
