Sad day in West Seattle

I happened to turn right behind this car as it was driving up a hill near where I live. Wanted to give the driver a thumbs-up, but he turned onto another arterial before I could pull up beside him. 911-T Targa. Almost certainly 1970 or 1971 from what I saw, so carbureted. It's been pretty hot (by our standards), the last week. Don't know if the driver was away from the car when the fire broke out or if he didn't have an adequate fire extinguisher. Either way, it really sucks.

Hopefully, the owner kept his insurance up to date and will be covered, but that doesn’t mitigate the pain of watching his treasured possession go up in flames. Perhaps some parts from the front half can be salvaged.

Sorta outside the box, but there was a motorcycle review from Jay Leno at Keanu Reeves' shop a few years back with a passing remark that he liked to "see through a bike" while he stood to the side.. as opposed to the space all taken up by items today. Probably said for mechanical and repair reasons.

It may not be a guarantee, but your chances of avoiding mishap improve with space around the carbs. In the sense that it enables someone to keep vigil for signs, since most of the time fuel doesn't pour out all of a sudden. In the sales/wanted section, abundant attention is given to panel gaps, doors, hoods, all weighed heavily. But in this area, the attention given is virtually none. So it may be worth exploring for some.

Somebody once asked me why I carry a fire extinguisher...I may have to save her life someday...

I carry 2 extinguishers in MY72. Call me paranoid but we once had a kitchen fire and the extinguisher in the pantry (2 years old) failed. Lesson learnt, 1 ruined towel and afresh coat of ceiling paint.
Always start my car with a basic procedure
Open the engine hood
Turn on the ignition to get the fuel pump going
Check for any petrol smell or fuel leaks
Start engine
Go check and close the lid.

Do you like the E50 or the E100?

I don't fool around. I carry a Halon fire extinguisher in my '69. Available from any aircraft supply house.
