I have been seeing and hearing so many different things that I am starting to confuse myself. :confused:
FOR A 73 S (on the back of the car):
1. What color should the 2.4 badge be?
2. What color should the grill be?
3. What color should the 911S badge?
4. What color should the P O R S C H E be?
Finally, does anyone have a good list of the options that were available on the 73 S's?

The displacement badge should be black with silver '2.4' #s and all the other items listed should be black also. The option list is quite long if you PM your fax # I can send you the list from the Carrera RS book. Have Fun! :)
How about for dark colored cars? Did they they use silver badging then?
Wasn't gold an option? Or was that on the earlier 70's cars?

Brian is correct however the black on the grille and the lettering on the engine lid (both lots) was black anodising and often went purple/black as time and the sun took its toll. The 2.4 badge should be black and chrome numbers and decimal point to the best of my knowledge. Never seen anything but that.

I have a 73S Targa which had silver lettering for all the lettering on the engine grille and I have seen other similar cars. Maybe as I am in Australia our specs were slightly different.
I thought that gold was standard on the earlier cars, or at least on the E and maybe T.
I'd love to know if silver was optional in lieu of the black in 73. I want my (potential) car to be correct, but it is a black car and silver would look pretty sharp rather than black on black.
A great reference book is Peter Morgan's "Original Porsche 911". In it he list colors, options, serial #'s, engine#'s plus numerous photos of original cars.It list for $34.95 was on sale at motorbooks.com for $15.95.I use it all the time

One caveat on the Morgan book. In the edition I have from 1994, he mistakenly repeats some of the VIN and engine number ranges on the tables at the back of the chapters where he sums up hp, production numbers etc - at least on the early 911 models (I never read past the F prgramme chapter - what for?). :D

According to Brett Johnson's book ( A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity, one should get BTW) the '69-71 'S' and 'E' models had gold emblems and lettering and T had silver ones. The T cars could also be ordered with gold emblems and lettering for those years. For '72-73 this changed to black for all models.
Of course there seems to be an exception based on what Clyde is telling us about his car. I don't see a part # for the 'E' and 'S' emblem in silver. Having said all of that I think a Black 'S' car would look great with silver emblems and lettering.

Thanks for the tip. I ordered the Morgan book 2 weeks ago and am still waiting for it. It was allegedly delivered to me on 1/5 but it is/was nowhere to be found. I really wanted it before I go out to see that S next weekend that you and I discussed. I have talked to its mechanic and agreed to a price with the Owner, pending the PPI.

Although I am generally a stickler for factory correct details, I do think I like the black body with silver lettering better than the black lettering. Not sure what I will do you.....hopefully I will have the car and can fuss on such details soon enough!
