couple of questions about them.
1) which is the correct model name/number of cibie or marichal hood mounted lights lights?
2) are they NLA, or can the still be bought new?
3)is there a very good replica available or somthing extremely close? the ones on aardvark intl's website dont really look right.
4) also where is the best place to get them or look for them (other than the obvious ebay).

They are NLA and expensive even in crap condition. Even worse, there are no replica's out there because no one has been able to figure out how to squash the round pod flat without destroying the damn thing.
There are a handful of hucksters on Ebay trying to sell the Cibie Oscars as the "original Cibie rally lights", but they are not the same so don't be fooled.
Soterik just scored an original fairly rough set on Ebay a few days ago for around $240, but I suspect after sourcing decent reflectors, and having the rims rechromed, he will be in them for around $5-600. Which is still a good deal since a good pair will run at least $7-800. Eric, i saw you tried to end the auction early - but seller wouldn'tgo for it.
Seems like the best option is to buy a 912 with cibies already on the car - then sell the car...

I was the losing bidder on those hood mounted lights, rats !
These had a weired ebay description ('running lights") and were at $9.95 for several days of the auction. They are french Marchal lenses and I tried to source replacement lenses but with such poor french wasnt able to follow many links. i am sure you could find them in France though.
I beleive the other hood mounted lights use Cibie Oscar lenses and possibly their chrome rings, although the ones I have seen seem to have a 'thicker" chrome ring to a std. Oscar. Having had many sets of Oscar and super Oscars on rally cars, I am sure a sheet metal guy could modify the std housing with a flat base to bolt to the hood. These are probably not identical to the authentic shape light housings but would be pretty close.
The marchals looked t be a good buy even with teh work required on them as they were certainly "original looking" in the pics. I recvd some hi-res extra pics for the seler and they appeared to match his description as being off an early car.
I am still looking for a set for my R project.
It is now very hard to find a pair in good condition, even in France, less than 400$ :)
The lights turned out to be in fair to good shape, though they need a restoration. The lense was near flawless.
Regarding Cibie vs. Marchal, the buckets for the lights are identical. The chrome rings on the Cibie are slightly wider than the Marchal, though it's by less than 1/4". The Cibie (and Marchal) overall dimensions are proprietary to that particular "light" and has no relation to the Oscar in lense size, and the trim ring isn't adaptable either. Note that these lights are also slightly larger than the standard 4 light units for standard headlights...so extremely difficult to find replacements, unless you know where to look ;)
