A tire and wheel expert I am not. I just sold a pair of R wheels to a friend with a 67 911 who likes to track the car in DE events. He was running deep 6's with 205/60/15 tires. He asked what the advantage is going to the R wheel.
Can I run a bigger tire under those stock non flare quarters he asked? Where is the advantage to running R wheels on the back? He runs a tad of negitive camber now, and the 6's don't rub.
I found really no advantage except the cool factor using the 7s on the silver 68. I run the same Hoosier 5.50 Vintage TDs front and back with a 22mm factory spacer on the rear and some negative camber as well. I did not trim anything. I think if you are willing to trim and rrstretch the rear quarters you may be able to go bigger. The Hoosier 5.50s do run smaller than GoodYear 5.50s by the way.

I think it's about faster cornering. :) Less rolling of the sidewall and preserving the contact patch during hard latteral Gs. The wider wheels worked for the 911R.
As for the cool factor, A friend of mine showed me some pics of his SWB 911 with Cadillac metallic brown paint and Blue Streak tires. OMG! Something to aspire to for sure. ;) Looking good is important too.
Rick, call Eric Linden. He runs 225 series rubber on the 7Rs on his SWB Gulf Blue 911S. I find the same setup an advantage on my blue car as well.
Jens it is all about STYLIN baby! The silver car does corner very well. The R had those great flares that would accept the next size tire which would really help cornering. John, Unfortunately I have not driven the car enough to wear down the tires to be able to tell you but they do seem to be wearing better than a regular Hoosier race tire but certainaly not anywhere as good as a street tire. Extra inch added to the inside offset - allowing a 215 or 225 tire to be mounted w/o fender mods. Wider tire patch = more grip, less likely to oversteer. I notice a difference with my 215s in back (195s in front) Watch tire inner sidewall clearance to spring plate bolts with the R wheels.Quote:
