I came across a 71 S Targa for today, thinking it might be a nice father's day present. Solid straight car has been repainted guards red which is not correct for year, also has T motor in it. Interior redone but not correct either. I am currious what the board members think this is worth.

T motor is a value killer; so is non-original guards red. These details aren't fun killers, though. If a fun car is your goal and not resale value, feel free to proceed.
Without more details, it is hard to tell exactly. I wouldn't pay more than good 'T' money for it though, which means absolutely south of $20K, probably below $15K unless it is an absolute stunner.
Without the motor, etc, the 'S' VIN is more of a curiosity than a point of valuation.
I agree, one could replace motor and repaint. If S values keep going up at some point car is worth reconfiguring. Obviously you can get this close to being correct with enough money but you can never make a T into a real S.

I'd value it based on the quality of it's body and the fact that it has a factory oil cooler, deep sixes etc.. The only S equipment not available on a T was the engine, so if it's missing........
