67 inlets...different from later..

Hello all.

I have been looking thro' my stash: I find a big differnece between some inlets I have dated 66, and all the later ones.

thes have a sand-cast look finish..later ones look smooth...and are painted black too.

the early inlets have a cast finish to the ports, later ones machined..

When did this change?

they all seem to be Mag alloy..

What was correct on a 67, and 68 S engine I wonder?

I asked this very question a while back but didn't get a response. I have a 901/05 engine which has aluminum manifolds, these are a bright silver color. If you look in the factory workshop manual, this is the correct color. Then later, the manifolds changed to black, and may be magnesium. Perhaps this was done around the same time as the 1968 introduction of the 911T.

Also, my manifolds have rectangular holes between the mounting flanges. The PMO manifolds have circular holes.

Hope this helps? In any event a 1967 normal is a 901/06 engine, my belief is that they should be natural aluminum with rectangular holes. Perhaps one of The Known Experts could chime in here.

I have now found the 1967 "S "inlet, it is dull die cast, and has no paint on it.

The 1968 has paint on it.

The 1966 is bright shiny, sand cast magnesium alloy..I'm 100% sure of this..it looks very smilar to the mag Solex inlets in fact.

Mine is a stock '67S and the inlet has the dull finish from the casting. No paint or indication that it ever was painted.

Just in case it helps, I have some aluminium manifolds which are date stamped 67. I am not 100% sure but I have seen different markings around the year stamp (on different manifolds) which may indicate the month. On this pair there are 4 small marks and thus I think the date is 4 67.

This is a 68S motor, sadly no longer in my posession. The manifolds match the magnesium case
