My 71 3.0 liter has a 901 box with a 915 flipped around shifter. It shifts into every gear great, except it's a little hard to get into first. Has anyone else tried this, and how did it work out for the shift into first gear?

There are many ways to skin this cat..............homemade versions galore or a predone conversion from Woods, Auto Associates,Seine and others. I have run a few different versions on the racecar and with some fiddle, found a set up I liked. Properly set up though, I prefer a stock 901 shifter with all new bushings and a shift handle that is 2" taller. How is the new car?
I have the original shifter, too, but I think that the hole in the original carpet :( will be too large to go back.
A shift into first at a standstill or moving?
From a standstill; could be the clutch pressure plate isn't fully disengaging. Check the clutch pedal free play adjustment.
When vehicle is moving; typically more difficult due to the increased gear reduction in first (gear ratio difference). Try double-clutching to match input shaft and 1st gear rotation speed.

I don't think it's the clutch, because it's easy to engage reverse. There's no grinding.
I am taking it, from the lack of response, that this is probably just a linkage adjustment issue, and that these adapted 915 shifters generally work okay.
"Just" may not be the correct modifier for 'linkage adjustment issue', in the case of Porsche 901 transmissions ;) ;)

The art of getting it into first gear
Try to ease it in - does not go.
Release the clutch a few times and try to ease it in - does not go.
The light turns green and people are getting impatient try to jam it in - does not go.
let the car roll ever so slightly and ease it in - success.
Ahh the skills required of a long hood ownership.
