These early S cars were seen on Early 911s site a few months ago. I would like to compile a list of the very early 911Ss. If you own any of these cars stand up, dont be shy.- 305113S-32nd S? , 305273S -France' 305280S-Seattle, 305481S-England-, 305545S-Baltimore, 305559S-Netherlands, 305570S-San Francisco, 305631S- [e-bay mystery man], 305687S- Denver. Was 306630 really the prototype 911S? Was it built July 66?. I would like to know the build date for these or any Ss of this period. Thanks.
Long's book has the first 1967MY at 305101 which would mean that 305113 would be the 13th built for the model year. I guess there would have been
some S prototypes before that time. Here's some potential numbers,
these came from an archive copy of the early911s.com site (now gone):
304065S Michigan
304316S Atlanta
They both seem way too early to be S, maybe the owners upgraded them
and listed them as S. If either owner stands up, I for one would like to
know more about these cars.

No, normal 911 and 911S chassis numbers were intersperesed and the numbers were not duplicated. So you might have, say, 305103S, and then 305104 could have been an S or not. We now how many, the split, but don't have a list of S and non-S chassis numbers broken out.Quote:

There is no correlation between chassis # and build order. There were more Ss than Ns so we can assume a certain ratio of Ss to Ns. Vin #s and build dates are really disjointed. According to vendor, the car did had a MY67 engine which was replaced trough factory prototyp dept. with a MY 63/64 experimental engine. Since then, the MY67 911S chassis has its MY63/64 proto engine.

Literally true but generally speaking cars with, say, a "5" ending chassis number were built later than, say, "1" ending one. For '67 year model, there were 1604N coupes and 1818S coupes; 358N targas and 360S targas.Quote:

The S was available for customers from August 66 on. Since they had to test the S brakes, engine and a few other unique S adaptions had the earliest (prototype) S most likely a pre S series number, in other words a number which is under 305100.
To find out you should go through the archives manually. Another option would be reading old Christos from late 65/ 66 to check for stories or pictures mentioning the development of the S. If you are lucky you see a VIN number when you are less lucky you will at least know in which period of Kardex files you have to search.

Definitely NOT an S prototype. Probably, IMHO, not a prototype at all unless something else. Maybe a 911R protoype! Are we having fun yet? LOLQuote:
