100L tank in 67S Coupe

Does anyone have an image showing the factory correct trunk carpeting in a '67 coupe equipped with the optional steel 100L tank?

I have seen the image in Dr. J's Guide to Restoration but it does not show how the center section of the carpet set is fitted. In his text, he states that the spare tire has a cover made of the same carpet material and hopefully someone has an image showing the spare fully dressed.

I know your reply is meant to be a light hearted observation, but it brings up an interesting point that I had not previously considered.

The factory's 1967 Rally Kit option, available on Coupes only, included "deletion of the front bumper supports (50.6 lbs)." The Rally Kit option included a long list of parts and preparation for the owner who planned to compete. As rally drivers value a chassis set up that can provide oversteer on command, the bumper weights were clearly not desirable for the intended audience.

However, the 100L tank was not included in the Rally Kit specs but was available as just another of the many standard production options. The big tank was listed under option code number 9499 "Increased fuel tank (100L - 26 US gallons)."

However, just ordering a tanker did not delete the cast iron "bumper supports."

I think the factory was fighting what one contemporary road tester referred to as animal oversteer and went with the bumper weights because they could be placed as far forward as possible - away from the mass of the engine hanging behind the rear axle. Not exactly a pur sang engineering solution I agree but still an effective kluge to aid the unsuspecting civilians.

Since you brought it up, do you have a complete scan of the sports
purpose options booklet for 1967MY ? I've got bits and pieces but
not the complete booklet.

Good point.

I agree with you 100% that contemporary SCCA racers took the "bumper supports" out of the front bumper when they race prepped their cars.

The R&T article describing the CP national championship 67S prepared by Alan Johnson and Bursch Engineering clearly states that Alan took the weights out of the bumper. They also ditched the deco molding on the bumpers (replaced with deco tape) and the rocker panel deco moldings too.

The SCCA production car rule book in those days required that the bumpers themselves be retained on production sports cars.

Alan J had been racing Speedsters for many years and no doubt was more than up to the task of taming a little wischen - or even alot of wischen!
