SWB black coil
Hi,
I am working on the electrical panel of my 911 project and I am not sure about the black coil decision. Maybe there are some experts out here ...
According to some previous discussions I have found here on the board, there were two typs of coils:
0 221 102 006 (9-64 to 1-66) superseded 0 221 102 050
0 221 102 026 (2-66 to 6-68) superseded 0 221 119 021
In this case I would need the first one, as it is for a 1964 911.
I do know two NOS coils for sale - 0 221 102 026 and 0 221 102 050. As both are not correct for 100%, I am not sure which one to take. Any suggestions?
What's the difference between 006 and 026? Are there any technical reasons not to go for 026?
For sure the best solution would be to find a NOS 006? But chances are low I guess.

Your second to best solution would be an used 0 221 102 006.
BTW I will check. I might have one and willing to swap it for a NOS 0 221 102 026

What year of car are you restoring? What production date? What number? That is the key.

Quite right Richard, I didn't catch it.
Well I think the answer is an 006, unfortunately all I have are 508 and 510 date codes in an 006 at the moment.
An 026 will have flat terminals, right for 66, wrong for 64.

Not sure if 64 is different from 66, but my 66 uses a special [Bosch] coil (I'm not with my cars now so I can't get the ID number) depending if car has stock ignition setup where power to coil first goes through resistor (small box on electrical panel with coiled wired wrapped around insulator) to drop voltage to coil to below 12 volts. Coil is only fed full 12 v on original ignition setup when cranking the starter motor (bypasses the resitor via a "step-down" relay also mounted on panel), to help with starting. The same yellow wire from the starter loops back to feed the step-down relay, which serves to send 12 volts directly to the output side of the resistor, in effect by-passing the resistor only during starting. When you stop cranking the engine, power to coil is allowed to come through resistor, which on my 66 is about 11v. Hope that made sense.

John, that is the way all the SWB kettering ignition operates, from 64 through 68, even though the 68 has a ceramic ballast resistor instead of the Beru or Bosch box-type with screw-on cover.

For sure the best solution is a NOS 0 221 102 006 and a good used one 0 221 102 006 is the second solution maybe.
But what is the best third solution? Is it 0 221 102 026 or 0 221 102 050. Alternatively I could wait for the 100% correct coil as my car is still a project talking 2 more years to more years to be completed.

I'm restoring a 65-build 911 with stock ignition system and have sourced a silver Bosch coil 0 221 119 021. A green decal states to use only with ballast resistor, which I'll use with the original resistor box. I assume it's Brazilian. Does anyone have any experience to offer? Is this a good coil to use?
